MUSIC MONDAYS

Dear friend

This Monday, I wanted to share with you music from a British composer in memory of Prince Philip, Queen Elisabeth’s beloved husband of over 70 years.

In 2007, Dranoff commissioned Sir Richard Rodney Bennett to compose a piece for the 2008 International 2 Piano Competition. Since its premiere, The Lilliburlero Variations  for 2 pianos has been loved by pianists and audiences alike, played all over the world in both  recitals and by orchestras including at the BBC proms in 2009.

Sir Richard discovered his aptitude and love for the piano at the knee of his mother. Throughout the years, mother and son would play two piano music leading to his life-long keen interest in the genre. In fact, in his later years, he teamed up with pianist Susan Bradshaw to perform and collect music scores written for 2 pianos.
He pursued multiple musical lives with extraordinary success. He was one of the more distinguished soundtrack composers of his era, having contributed to some 50 films and winning 4 Oscar nominations  over the span of 40 years.

Queen Elizabeth knighted Sir Richard for his contributions to British arts, including several commissions by and in honor of the royal family. For example, These Three was commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster to mark the Diamond Anniversary of the marriage of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.

One aspect of the mission of the Dranoff since our inception has been the commissioning of new music for 2 pianos. Your involvement and generosity will help us continue engaging living composers and bringing their music on the stage. We cannot do this alone. Please click here to make your gift. Countless thank yous!

Warmly,

Piano

Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.

In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song
Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong
To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside
And hymns in the cosy parlour, the tinkling piano our guide.

So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamour
With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour
Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast
Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past.
