MUSIC MONDAYS

Dear friend

We just trekked through an annus horibilis, and our eyes and hearts are unquestionably changed.
In today’s choice of music, Meredith Monk’s Trekking, accompanying Stephanie and Saar’s performance are images of their ascent to the heights of the majestic Tetons. Hardship and reward.

Artists always journey to explore known repertoire to find fresh expression, to find new compositions that give voice to the present and that reflect their place in it. This path is filled with much work, but also with much beauty. It is a path that we have long invested in. Dranoff has directly underwritten the creation of 14 composition for the 2 piano genre, but we have also worked with artists to generate new transcriptions and new film scores for numerous projects.  Concert seasons have been regular showcases for Dranoff laureates, but also many other pianists who have discovered the pleasure of duo piano.

One of the great joys is to see how “our” family of pianists creates their own market places not only in teaching, but in presenting and creating. To wit, The Makrocosmos Project, founded by Stephanie and Saar to celebrate contemporary American music and Pacific Northwest musicians.

I am wishing all of us the chance to cherish those experiences of great vistas opening up. Let’s make room in our increasingly normal lives to share such moments together.

Warmly,

THE PEACE of WILD THINGS

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
