MUSIC MONDAYS

Dear friend

Sir Richard Rodney Bennett was one of the most famous British composers of the late 20th century, and Dranoff is proud to have commissioned him to compose one of our most popular pieces for two pianos, The Liliburlero Variations, composed for the 2008 Dranoff Competition.
He received his musical training at the Royal Academy of Music, and became fascinated with German avant garde music, as well as studying serialism and 12 tone techniques with Pierre Boulez.

"He lived multiple musical lives with extraordinary success". (Adam Sweeting, December 2012) He began composing at age 19, balancing his interest in serialism with writing melodic, lyrical works. In addition to his commission for Dranoff, his composing output included three symphonies, numerous concertante pieces, children’s works, a jazz-classical fusion concerto for saxophonist Stan Getz and a swarm of chamber and solo and duo instrumental pieces. He is best known in the United States for his award winning film scores, including Oscar nominations for his work on Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) and Murder on the Orient Express (1974). He also wrote the scores for Enchanted April (1991) and in 1994 the score of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

A brilliant pianist, Bennett developed and sustained a prolific career as a jazz pianist and singer, an interest dating back to his student years, when he earned much-needed cash playing jazz. Over the years, he developed relationships with outstanding jazz singers and performed worldwide.

In an interview Dranoff did with him in 2007, here is what this warm, charming man had to say: “When people come to me and tell me that they grew up on my children’s music for piano, or they sang in my children’s opera - that is a true reward because that music is alive.” For the full conversation, click here

Funeral Blues

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message ‘He is Dead’.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
