Dranoff2 continues to widen the lens of our programming. Last week's powerful and contagious West African Beats performance yields to next month's concert created as a part of a series by the Makrokosmos Project, honoring outstanding and uncommon, extraordinary women.
It highlights women composers of great classical music, Clara Schumann to the contemporary greats, Chen Yi and Gabriela Lena Frank. In addition, “Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman” honors those women who have made major positive differences in our society and culture.
In keeping with the series’ original intent, Dranoff2 will honor local greats: the founders of the Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation, Loretta Dranoff and Dr. Ruth Greenfield. Brought together by their love for piano music and their passion for teaching, they established the first internationally accredited two piano competition in the world, joining the Van Cliburn, Cleveland, Tokyo, and Chopin in great piano competitions. We lost Loretta in 2011, but Ruth continues to be celebrated as one of the pillars of musical performance in Miami; at the age of 99, she still plays and promotes the music of high art.
Finally, this concert honors Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her high-level contributions of the legal decisions and standards that consider the quality of life of both the common and uncommon women and men in America.
The artists and creators of “Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman” are Stephanie Ho and Saar Ahuvia, Founders of the Makrokosmos Project and longtime Dranoff2 Piano favorites. Stephanie and Saar are high-level performers, Laureates of the 2008 Dranoff International 2 Piano Competition to great concert artists in the United States and all over the world to performing as a beloved PIANO SLAM duo.
Of course, the concert title is a play on words and refers to Aaron Copland’s 1942 American masterpiece: “Fanfare for the Common Man.”
