Dear Gabriele -
The Indigenous Peoples Day reminds us that human migration has existed since our species has been in existence. Beginning approximately 2 millions years ago, Homo erectus have wandered, moved and explored their worlds.
Who first entered the New World, not the “India” discovered by Columbus? Those descendants had their own musical traditions that served to strengthen their communities, to be a spiritual connection to the earth and to communicate between groups. Europeans made their discoveries and brought their own musical heritage. Despite the scars of eradication and colonialism, so much of this vast region’s richnesses continues their dialogue with the music of the “Old World”, be it the rhythms of the Ciboney Taino people who lived in the Cuba when it became one of the first colonies, or the transcendental flute music of the Navajo, the American Indian perspective into the concert music world, and the brilliant sound painting by a European.
I hope you have a peaceful week.
Warmly,
Gabriele Fiorentino
