Dear Gabriele,

This week will see the final round of judging the over 1000 entries for the Piano Slam 15 Countywide student poetry competition. The student poets wrote about Miami, music, heat, warmth, chiarosccuro, science, love, identity, dreams using either the theme of  “Hot Music Hot Miami” or using musical terms. Expect adagio, presto, crescendo and the annually recurring favorite, de-crescendo. But you can also expect some truly wonderful writing. I have personally read a few hundred of the poems, and cannot wait to see how the creative forces behind the program embed those poems into the ensemble performance on April 19^th. 

This year Piano Slam finalists and professional dancers will be choreographed by two of Miami’s own  - Liony Garcia, and Maya Billig. Along with a number of classical pieces, the  feature piece will be John Corigliano’s Chiaroscuro; it is a challenging choice to perform on stage, but, as Walt Disney is credited with saying – “It is fun to do the impossible”
