Hello, Friend!
Happy Fall Equinox!

That's right, summer is officially done. It's harvest time, and probably getting close to the end of your window to order Halloween costumes online at a reasonable price. What a wonderful time of year. And I must admit, this is one of my most favorite newsletters because I get the good fortune of announcing that CONCERT SIGN-UPS are now open.

Without further adieu, let's get to the news...

With peace, love & music,
Anna

TIPS WELCOME
Setting Up Your Practice Space
We musicians spend so much time practicing that it’s wise for us to deliberately optimize the spaces where we practice. We should arrange our practice spaces to boost productivity. A studio or practice room doesn’t have to be fancy for us to work efficiently and make impeccable music, but there are some things without which we musicians flounder. Second, whether a practice setting is stylish or ordinary, we can transform it into a creative temple, a place where inspiration flows.

Twelve Practice Room Essentials
1. Suitable chair (maybe with a wedge cushion)
2. Music stand to hold paper music or an electronic display
3. Notebook and pencils
4. Electronic metronome and tuner
5. Clock and timer (phones work well, but in airplane mode to limit distractions)
6. Mirror (for monitoring movement habits)
7. Audio and/or video recorder , e.g., a Zoom H4n (audio) or Q4n (audio & video)
8. Instrument stand/holder
9. A bottle of water
10. Adequate lighting and climate control
11. Relative quiet and privacy
12. Hearing protection (for those who play loud instruments or rehearse loudly)
THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC
How does music affect our emotions? Neuroscience may hold the key

No one’s clear on exactly how music affects our feelings yet, but advances in neuroscience are bringing us closer to figuring out why and how our brains attach emotional resonance to music. We’re starting to comprehend how melodies affect our feelings, why certain music makes us want to get up and dance and why some harmonies trigger fear. Some studies have already had direct applications in the field of music therapy, which uses music to treat neurological, emotional and physical disorders. These advances may soon provide the answer to a more fundamental debate: Does music have intrinsic properties that make it happy or scary to everyone? Or do people associate certain feelings with music strictly because of the context in which they hear it?
PROJECT STOP! COLLABORATE & LISTEN: INSPIRATIONAL VIDEO OF THE MONTH
250 musicians are Rockin' In A Free World! From Grote Markt, Haarlem (the Netherlands) on May 29th 2016:
STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Priscilla Chou
INSTRUMENT: Piano
TEACHER: Luna
AGE: 8
GRADE: 3rd
SCHOOL: Kolb Elementary
STARTED LESSONS: August 2018
HOBBIES: Ballet
Congrats to Priscilla for standing out above the rest this month! And thank you to her supportive family, who was kind enough to share this:

"From a very young age, Priscilla has had a special affinity to music. As a toddler, she would wander off and we'd often find her just sitting quietly, and listening to someone playing the guitar, violin, or piano; mesmerized by the music. Since Priscilla started piano lessons, we never had to worry about how she was doing. As a child, my parents had to force me to practice piano. But with Priscilla, she'd play whenever her heart drew her to the keys. She practices and learns at her own pace, and just enjoys the music. After each lesson, she's always excited to share with us something new she played with her teacher. Thank you for being a part of Priscilla's musical journey!"

FEATURED TEACHER
Isabella Goze
It is our pleasure to welcome Isabella to the Music Time family! Raised in the "melting pot" of Istanbul, Turkey, Isabella comes to us with a unique background of music experience and education. Western classical music has been her passion since childhood. Her education focused on Opera performance, as well as Vocal Pedagogy. As a teacher since 1999, Isabella has worked with students of all ages and abilities, helping each to build both a stronger voice, and a stronger love for music.

"I knew that I wanted to be a singer since I was 5! I know, it 's going to sound cliche, but I really would close the door, have my hairbrush in my hand, and practice singing in front of the mirror!"

"Even though I was growing up in in Istanbul, I was really interested in Western Music. I remember seeing Ida, and I think Magic Flute. I really love Mozart, and I like singing anything from Mozart. Seeing those operas at a young age, it really gets ingrained in your heart, and not only in your mind, because the music is so beautiful. It just made me decide that I wanted to study classical music, like seriously."
