Hello Glastonbury!
By now, I’m sure you’ve seen the theme for the 2024 Summer Reading program (which ends on Saturday!) a thousand times – Read, Renew, Repeat! We've enjoyed spending this summer with you featuring programs and displays based on recycling, ecology, and other earth-friendly concepts that will make our community (and our world) better. Now, I want to share how our library is supporting this idea, every day! First, the obvious: By sharing the materials purchased by the library across the community - the books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, and more- we’re creating less waste and ensuring that each item is used to its maximum potential. As part of this flow, we also recycle as many materials as possible when they’ve worn out, using a book recycling organization to ensure every page possible is re-used. We also work with the Town to be more energy efficient, turning off lights and electronics when not in use, installing more efficient light bulbs, automating our HVAC systems, and more. We also help inform the public on local sustainability programs, like the Town’s food recycling program and the Pollinator Pathway. Finally, we keep environmental impact in mind when making purchases – for instance, the company that produced the new library cards we designed (see a sneak peek of the new design above!) were selected, in part, because they are made without PVC plastics.
I always say the Library is the best card in your wallet because you get so much from that one resource, but as you “Read, Renew, and Repeat” all year, know that using your card means you’re saving more than just money when you use it!
Happy Recycling,
Amy
