Historical Tidbit: Edward Everett

The most famous of the early teachers in our town was Edward Everett who was born April 11, 1794. Only fifteen years old when he came to East Bridgewater, Edward Everett was then a junior at Harvard University and spent his ten-week vacation from school earning money teaching in the Eastville section of town.  He once said of his teaching experience in East Bridgewater, "As a class they were well-mannered and gave me no extra trouble, but I was thankful when the time was up. I found that some of my engaging country pupils were very difficult to handle." In later years, Edward Everett served as minister of Trinity Church in Copley Square, Governor of Massachusetts, US Secretary of State, US Senator from Massachusetts, Ambassador to the Court of St. James (what would now be Ambassador to Great Britain) and he was the principal speaker at Gettysburg the day President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address.

The Importance of Water Safety in the Summer
Water Safety: During the summer months, many families will spend a lot of time on the water. We live in an area that is close to a wide variety of water options including rivers, lakes, ponds, streams, and the ocean, not to mention backyard and community pools. Whenever you are boating, kayaking, canoeing or using stand-up paddle boards, always remember to use approved personal floatation devices (PFD). For information on how to choose an appropriate PFD by the U.S. Coast Guard, visit: How to Choose a Life Jacket. Also, be sure to supervise children when they are in or near the water. Drowning does not always look like the splashing and noises tha t you see in movies and on television. To learn more, check out this article from Slate: Rescuing Drowning Children: How t o Know When Someone is in Trouble in the Water

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ~ Plato

"You have to, take a deep breath. and allow the music to flow through you. Revel in it, allow yourself to awe. When you play allow the music to break your heart with its beauty.” ~ Kelly White

"This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” ~ Leonard Bernstein
Let us make music, dear readers and friends. Let us not talk of difficult things, but experience the joy of a unified rhythm, a melody for all to enjoy. This moment, we just need to absorb and feel that. Let now be that moment, so that you feel good and when challenge comes to you, ( and it will) that you smile and say " Welcome, would you like to hear my song? "

~ Jacquie
