Sing My Soul, His Wondrous Love
Musical Musings for Eastertide
by Sharon Downey
This Sunday will be the Sixth Sunday after Easter. The Gospel reading, John 14: 15-21, includes the following, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.” This is the text for one of the most beautiful anthems, “If Ye Love Me” by Thomas Tallis. This recording is from a CD that the Cathedral Choir produced in 1996. Some of our current choir members are part of this recording: Sharon Davenport, David Baxter, Greg Krivonak and Patrick Rose.
This Sunday is also Rogation Sunday which continues until Ascension Day, this year on May 17. Seedlings, plants, fields, and gardens are blessed. When the weather permitted, we processed outside at the end of the service singing psalms for the clergy to “beat the bounds” of the parish.
In her Monday Meditation, Dean Melinda wrote about Hildegard and her writings of viriditas, or greenness. Following is one of Hildegard’s compositions about viriditas, “O nobilissim a viriditas" sung by The Rose Ensemble. (The music of Hildegard may be an acquired taste but please give it a try!)

"O nobilissim a viriditas"
O most noble Greenness, rooted in the sun,
And who shines in bright serenity upon the wheel,
Nothing on earth can comprehend you,
You are encircled in the arms of divine mysteries.
You are radiant as the dawn and burn as the flame of the sun.

I also chose some more traditional favorites to add to your Rogation playlist:

"For the Beauty of the Earth" by John Rutter
Sung by the Vocal Arts Academy of Milwaukee
"Christ hath a Garden" by Gerald Near
Sung by the Trinity Episcopal Choir of Arlington, Virginia

The Cathedral Sings and Plays
Today’s Cathedral singer is Josie Noyes singing “Blackbird” by the Beatles. Josie is a former chorister and is now a student at Penn State, Harrisburg. Her band is One Wing and they have played at PACA and the Ballet Haus.
Thanks for contributing, Josie!
