Muskegon YMCA shares highlights of Veggie Van

At the August meeting of the Muskegon County Senior Activities Committee Airn Sessink, community engagement coordinator for the Muskegon YMCA, shared information about the Veggie Van, which is funded in part by the Muskegon County Senior Millage.

Data pulled from the US Census shows that a large number of residents are more than one mile (urban) or 10 miles (rural) from a supermarket. The Y's Veggie Van has partnerships with six senior housing complexes and helps meet the needs of those older adults through weekly orders, providing fresh and affordable produce and healthy snacks.

The Y also has a partnership with Muskegon Correctional Facility, where inmates gain hands-on experience and certifications while helping grow produce to keep prices low and provide a variety of produce options. More than 2,000 pounds were donated this year.

For more information on the Y Veggie Van, contact Airn Sessink at asessink@muskegonymca.org.
