The New Normal?
Cave Creek was incorporated by a group of folks with a real appreciation for the Sonoran Desert. We love the wildlife, the plants, and the vistas. But, there is a scourge and threat to these things and that is Globe Chamomile!

According to a little research this invasive originates in South Africa and is taking certain regions of our Country by storm. It is very pretty and still many people don't realize the threat until it dries out and becomes a fire hazard. 

Many property owners have made gallant efforts at removing the "fuel load" while others have chosen to ignore it. Procrastination is the keyword here. According to a firefighter friend of mine, many people don't even attempt to make their properties safe until they see smoke on the horizon or even in their neighborhood.

We will continue to have wet Winters and Springs which will increase the incidence of fire every year as the temperatures go up and the humidity goes down. In order to protect what you have on your own property I believe that diligent pulling of new plants or the correct preemergent is the only answer. Unfortunately this will be an annual effort.

We will never be able to completely eliminate the dangers of fire but, there are common sense steps that may be taken to mitigate the threat. It is not time for knee jerk reactions for these remedies but time for careful consideration of just what we can do without further restrictions on private property rights.
So, the New Normal is an increased threat of fire.

Our individual responsibility should be to reduce our fuel loads and as usual, Be Safe!

John Marion Sears was a Phoenix homesteader and fifty-two-year Cave Creek cattle rancher. He was born in 1843, when he died in 1937 at the age of 94, his estate was valued at around $900,000 in 2019 dollars. His Phoenix home was an 80-acre homestead established in the early 1890s. The homestead would be considered the heart of Phoenix now as it fronted Central Avenue and extended from Indian School Road to Thomas Road. The homestead was a vast bountiful garden with orchards of apples, pears, figs, peaches, and almonds; dairy cows roamed the grounds. Mr. Sears lived there with his wife Mary, daughter Ella, and sons Perry and George. The Sears’ home was one of the early framed homes in Phoenix. Most homes were adobe because lumber was scarce. With a new Phoenix railroad connection in 1887 lumber became available and affordable. In 1969 the Sears’ home was days away from demolition; fortunately, it was saved and moved to the Pioneer Living History Museum near I-17, south of Anthem. The “Victorian Mansion” can be toured today. In 1887, Mr. Sears established a ranch with his son-in-law Harry Kay, east of today’s Cave Creek Road (as it turns north to Seven Springs) and extending close to the Verde River. The ranch included a defensive hilltop Hohokam site established around A.D. 1050 and occupied until around A.D. 1200. Perhaps you have heard of the Sears-Kay Ruin.
