From the Cave Creek Museum
Kraig Nelson, historian
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) has enjoyed an important relationship with the Cave Creek Museum for years. Many important exhibits from their Museum, called Huhugum Ki, reside, on loan, at the Cave Creek Museum. The SRPMIC reservation was established by President Rutherford B. Hayes (19 th President) June 14, 1879; today, it encompasses about 54,000 acres east of Scottsdale  (think Talking Stick Resort and Casino and baseball venue, Salt River Field ). The Pima (Akimel O’odham) and the Maricopa (Piipaash) are two distinct tribes who came together farming on the Gila and Salt Rivers prior to Arizona becoming a territory. They also formed a “military” alliance. That “alliance” was involved in the last Native American verses Native American battle in North America! It was a major battle that took place September 1, 1857 about eight miles north of today’s Maricopa, AZ. The combatants included two tribes from the Colorado River area known as the Yuma (Quechan) and Mohave (or Mojave) against the Maricopa and Pima. The Colorado River warriors were aided by local Natives including the Tonto Apaches and the Yavapai. The Yuma and Mohave walked 160 miles to attack primarily the Maricopa resulting from generations of conflict. The battle lasted about two hours; and because most of the Apaches and Yavapai left the area prior to the battle, the Yuma and Mohave were annihilated, hundreds met their maker with deadly, approximate two-foot, mesquite war-clubs. The Battle of Maricopa Wells or the Battle of Pima Butte is one of the most historic Arizona battles you’ve never heard about, until now.

John Crane - Vice Mayor
Happy Birthday America! CIVANA Carefree is busy preparing for another unique, spectacular, fire season-safe and pet-friendly Fourth of July celebration. CIVANA’s Second Annual Spectacular Aerial Drone Light Show and Community Block Party will take place on Saturday, July 6 from 7–9:30 p.m. The Block Party begins at 7 p.m., with live music, CIVANA culinary delights and local food trucks complemented with adult beverages from Terras. Admission is free and Block Party concessions are cash-only. The aerial drone light show begins at 8:45 p.m., with chairs and blankets permitted in the viewing zone. A short walk from the Chamber’s Carefree office to Historic Spanish Village will present you with an astounding site – a sand sculpture coming to life at the hands of our own world-renowned sculptor and pumpkin carver, Ray Villafane! A very large sleeping sand dragon has landed on a wall just outside the patio of the Black Mountain Coffee Shop. Stop by to visit, and be sure to browse Historic Spanish Village’s many distinctive restaurants and shops for a memorable summer sand experience.

Despite the heat of summer, it is time to think about the Town of Carefree’s Fifth Annual Enchanted Pumpkin Garden event. This year several new and imaginative sponsorship opportunities are available, from the simplest to the most extravagant. Your business sponsorship will provide visibility not only with local Foothills residents, but with visitors from the entire Phoenix metropolitan area and beyond! Contact the Town today and let us work with you to craft a custom package that meets your needs, and showcases your organization during this premier signature Town event.
Oh No! Why is the Cave Creek 2920 Budget so much?
Cave Creek is our community. We love it for many different reasons. Our FY2020 budget reflects the essential elements of a healthy community: community safety, economic and educational opportunities, environmental quality, parks and recreation, community design, social and cultural interconnection, transportation options, and quality housing.

There is a comprehensive recap on the Towns Web Page. In short, we've been a bit "gun shy" after the recession. I believe it is prudent to have a rainy day fund in light of how tight things were. That is now the case. We're now taking care of Business!

So, the July heat is upon us and I'm still seeing lots of large Private Property areas covered in the invasive Globe Chamomile. Just one spark and we're in for a rough time. The rains are still a ways off and dry lightning always precludes the monsoon season. Please take action to protect our Town.
As to what's happening around Town? Just because it's hot doesn't mean life stops. Music, Food, and entertainment are still here for our guests and ourselves.

In case you're not aware of it, there is a Thrift Store in Town that has been here about a year and the funds generated by the Store go toward operation of a Community Center. It's a real benefit to Cave Creek. The name is Infinite Finds and it is located in the old Pawn Shop/Restaurant building across from Local Jonny's. Stop in and ask about their activities!
Stay Safe and I'll see you right here next Month!
