Please remember: Because LT closed due to inclement weather, Presidents' Day, Monday, February 19, will now be used as a make-up day and school will be in session as usual. Please plan accordingly.

If LT is forced to close again, Institute Day, Monday, April 23, will be used as the next make-up day.
LT's radio station, WLTL 88.1FM, is hosting its annual Rock-a-Thon to raise money for the station. The event will begin at 5am Friday February 16, and conclude at 9:06pm Monday, February 19, for a total of 88.1 continuous hours. LTTV will also broadcast and stream video live over the internet and cable.

WLTL is celebrating its 50th anniversary and is planning an extra big Rock-a-Thon, including a live broadcast of the Boy's Basketball Blackout Game, a few alumni shows, and three overnight shows.

Students will take pledges from listeners at 708-482-9585 or donate online at WLTL.
Twenty-five LT senior athletes recently signed letters of intent to play their respective sports in college. For a complete list of athletes and where they intend to play, click on the photo above.
For the first time in LT history, the varsity poms squad qualified for both the IHSA Competitive Dance State Final and the Illinois Drill Team Association (IDTA) State competitions.

At the IDTA competition, the junior varsity team took 3rd place in Lyrical and 3rd place in the Pom Dance category. The varsity squad earned 1st place in the Lyrical category and achieved the highest overall score among 3A Division schools.
LT is just $2,000 shy of its $20,000 fundraising goal!! Help them reach it and help the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois at the same time.

For the fifth consecutive year, LT was named the "Cool School," an award given to the K-12 school that raises the most amount of money. The team was also named "Golden Plungers," for the fourth consecutive year for being the overall team that raises the most amount of money.

To donate, go to LT Polar Plunge and select a team member to contribute to.

PRINCIPAL WATERMAN REFLECTS ON TRAGEDY
paper-people-chain.jpg
Dear LT Families,

Today, many of us are reflecting on the role we serve as students, parents, educators and individuals as we attempt to process the latest school shooting in our nation. In the wake of events such as these, we use terms like senseless, thoughts, prayers, and tragedy in our attempt to explain the unexplainable. We seek answers for why it happens, how we can prevent it from happening again, and how best to support those most closely affected.

From a practical perspective, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL tragedy reminds us of the importance of regularly reviewing, updating, and familiarizing ourselves with our emergency planning procedures. Emergency plans in schools are complex documents, developed with police and fire personnel input and designed to provide guidance for various types of school emergencies. I've encouraged our staff to not only review these procedures on a general level, but also think about how these procedures are implemented within each specific classroom, office area and environment in which they work each day. Emergency procedures are critical components of maintaining safe learning environment.

It is important to note the integral role that all educators and parents play in building a positive relationship with each student. In the past 2+ years, I have discussed school safety with a variety of individuals, including students working on school projects, parents inquiring about specific measures within our school, and reporters looking for insight into this topic. I consistently mention that the most effective strategy we have is our ability to build positive relationships and connections with individual students. Regardless of the specific political side one takes in this issue (gun control legislation, mental health and wellness support, school security funding, etc.), it is difficult to argue with the power of an adult role model connecting with an individual student in a meaningful way. As educators, we have numerous daily interactions with our colleagues and students, and each of one of these interactions can either build confidence and develop self-worth in those around us or destroy hope and create skepticism in others. Don't underestimate the impact we ALL have in maintaining a positive learning community. It is important we listen to what others (friends, family members, colleagues, and peers) are saying and doing. If you hear or see something that is concerning or causes you to question, please share that information with a trusted adult at LTHS. Through our interactions, we build confidence, create hope, instill self-worth and influence our school culture...one person at a time.

Of course, we learn in our classrooms, confront our struggles, and celebrate our successes this week with a heavy heart as we keep in our minds all those affected by the tragedies that have occurred in our nation's schools.

Thanks for reading, take care of yourself and others, and enjoy the weekend.

ALL SCHOOL ASSEMBLY RESCHEDULED FOR 2/23
The 18th Annual All-School Assembly has been rescheduled for Friday, February 23. Due to the snow day on February 9, the assembly had to be postponed. The assembly is the one and only time all LT students are under the same roof at the same time. Please join us for a memorable showcase of student talent and school spirit.
ELLIOTT TO BE RECOGNIZED DURING BLACKOUT
Friday is the 10th anniversary of the Blackout game. Come celebrate a decade of darkness as the Lions take on Glenbard West. There will be a special presentation during the third quarter for LT alumnus and Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl kicker Jake Elliott. Free fan towels will be given to LTHS students. A lucky student will have a chance to shoot a 1/2 court shot for a 2018 Toyota Camry. Blackout t-shirts will be on sale at the game for $10. The game will be broadcast LIVE on WLTL 88.1FM and LTTV's YouTube channel. Don't miss the home game of the year.
LT ARTWORK TO COMPETE NATIONALLY
Nearly three dozen pieces of art work created by 16 LT artists will advance to the Scholastic Art Awards national competition in New York, where they will join selections from across the country. Judges will critique and choose just 700 winning pieces based on thought, technique, execution and overall impact. LT's winning contingent includes 32 Gold Key pieces and one Gold Key Art Portfolio.

Five students will advance to national competition with multiple pieces of art. Among the multiple winners are Kyle Niego with three Gold photographs, Cain Nocera with six photographs, Amelia Brisk with two Gold mixed media pieces, Syrus Reardon with four Gold sculptures, and Lauren Trail with a Gold Portfolio, three drawings, one mixed media, one painting and one print.

Five students are repeat honorees, having earned recognition last year. Repeat honorees include Laura Cahill, Kyle Niego, Alexis Fergon, Caroline Higney and Lauren Trail.

In addition to the pieces that will advance to national competition, Lion artists received two Silver Key Portfolios and one Honorable Mention Portfolio in which the student exhibits a thematic group of eight works, something that takes months to develop, along with 26 Silver Key awards, pieces that represent the second highest level of achievement, and 18 Honorable Mention awards , works judged worthy of recognition.

Click the artwork above for a collection of winning pieces and a complete list of winning artists.
STUDENT SURVEY TO ASSESS HEALTH RISKS

Beginning February 28, LT will administer the Illinois Youth Survey (IYS) to all students. The purpose of the IYS is to better understand student attitudes and behaviors that can impact student problems and academic success. The survey will ask about nutrition, physical activity, bullying, tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. Students will be asked to complete the survey (with no names or identification numbers) that will be confidentially administered during one class period. The survey is completely voluntary and privacy will be strictly protected.

Each family received a letter allowing you to exclude your child from participation. The letter only needs to be returned if you do not want your child to participate.

LT will be provided with a local report of the combined student results which will help to determine which programs may be needed to keep students safe and healthy. For more information, visit the Illinois Youth Survey website.

CONGRATS TO ALL-STATE MUSICIANS
Fourteen LT students recently returned from a weekend-long statewide music conference, having rehearsed with and played alongside the best student musicians in the state. These All-State Musicians participated in the 70th annual Illinois Music Educators All-State Conference festival in Peoria, Illinois. Students learned under noted guest conductors and performed in a concert to culminate the three-day festival.

The 14 LT student musicians were selected through a stringent audition and participation in the ILMEA District Festival. This is one of the highest honors an Illinois musician can receive. Five students are repeat honorees, having been named among the All-State ranks last year. Once a student is named an All-State musician, they re-audition at the convention for the coveted Honors distinction; six LT students earned Honors recognition.

UNIQUE WAYS TO SUPPORT LTHS STUDENTS
There are numerous opportunities for parents, friends and families to support LTHS and our students. Below are just a few of the more unique ways in which supporting LT is made fun. For a complete list of LT fundraising activities, click the Fundraising Calendar.

Tickets and sponsorships are now available for The Legacy Guild's 6th Annual "Big Spring Event" at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn on Saturday, February 24, to raise money for college scholarships for students who have lost a parent while living in the boundaries of Lyons Township High School. Your ticket includes great food and beverages, buses from LaGrange to Fitzgerald's and entertainment by Mike & Joe, the Midwest's most renowned cover band. Thanks to your support, The Legacy Guild has provided $478,500 in college scholarships since its inception in 2012. Legacy Guild Scholars receive a $2,500 scholarship renewable for up to four years of college. Tickets and sponsorships can be purchased at www.TheLegacyGuild.com.

The Transition Program coffee shop and coaster production business called Transition Perks located in downtown Western Springs, is a great opportunity to support students. The business is student-operated and designed to develop the skills necessary to obtain future competitive employment. The proceeds fund scholarships, vocational training programs, and future student-operated micro-businesses. Private label Transition Perks coffee cans, roasted by Stewart's Coffee are available for purchase at the LT Transition Perks Web Store.

The Parent Teacher Council subsidizes the Post Prom celebration, a safe, substance-free cruise on Lake Michigan with music, refreshments and a view of the Chicago skyline. To help keep our teens stay safe and substance free, please promsupport the annual Post Prom online auction scheduled for April 11-20. If you have auction items to donate, such as sports tickets, theatre tickets, gym memberships, etc., contact PTC. Also, please consider a donation to the PTC Post Prom and mark your calendars for April 11.
