Infrastructure Insights: Valves

Valves play a critical role in water systems by controlling the flow of water through pipelines. These essential components help ensure reliable delivery to homes and businesses while also allowing for system maintenance and emergency response.

Different types of valves serve specific purposes within our water systems, let's explore a few common ones!

  • Gate valves are used to completely stop or allow water flow and are commonly found in main water lines.

  • Ball valves regulate water movement with a rotating sphere and are often used in meter connections.

  • Check valves prevent backflow by stopping the flow of water back into the system, helping to protect drinking water from contamination.

Valves are a crucial part of maintaining a dependable water supply. They allow our crews to isolate specific sections of the system for repairs without shutting off service to an entire area and isolate the impact of water main breaks. By preventing pressure surges and reducing the risk of infrastructure damage, valves also help extend the lifespan of pipes and other essential components.

Without properly functioning valves, safe and efficient delivery of water would be impossible. The next time you turn on the tap (also a valve!), remember that behind the scenes, these vital pieces of infrastructure and our team are hard at work ensuring that clean water reaches every faucet!

Project Spotlight

Mustang is in the process of drilling a new well and constructing a new 1.5-million-gallon elevated storage tank adjacent to our satellite office in Gunter!

Challenge

As the population in Mustang Special Utility District's service area continues to grow, additional means of water production and storage are needed to meet customer demand during peak times.

Solution

Mustang contracted with CB&I Storage Tank to construct this 1.5 million gallon spheroid storage tank and C Miller Drilling to drill the accompanying well, helping us to maintain supply during peak demand.

Project Investment

Approximately $9 Million.

In the photo, you can see our Gunter office in the top right and the white circle in the middle is the foundation of the tower. Accompanying the tower foundation is the well (located in the brown substrate between the bottom of the photo and the tower) that will be put into service once the tower is complete!
