Dear Marquette Families,
This is a start to the school year I would have never imagined. Or, to be honest, wanted. We are all facing the consistent challenges and new ways of living, working, and being each day. The effects of Racism and COVID 19 persist as we prepare for the start of the ‘20-’21 school year.
As I talked to families and worked with staff the last few weeks, I have been awed by the resilience and commitment to make this year successful for our children. Marquette staff members have amped up their commitment to anti-racist teaching practices throughout summer. While we all recognize there is a long way to go to eliminate the systemic racism and implicit bias that permeates schools, we are committed to making these changes. This will be reflected in our materials, curriculum, and ways of working.
Teachers have committed to learning and using new technology to create more engaging and dynamic learning experiences for students. Staff members are finding new ways to connect with families through virtual experiences, Ready, Set, Zooms!, deliveries, material distributions, and reverse parades. They have been working with child care providers to prepare our spaces and schedules to support students. Overall, we see our current situation as an opportunity to try new things in education and make it better. We have hope.
I ask that we all have patience as we move into this school year. Even with the best efforts of families, staff, community members, and our kids, things will not go as planned. We bring together new tech tools, schedules, and curriculum all at the same time. Students will be experiencing school in different ways, and there will be so many different people supporting them. There will be some frustrations and adjustments.
Our priority will be to move forward together. Marquette staff will commit to building relationships with kids and families as our priority in September. We will take time to teach kids and families the routines and structures of virtual learning. We will get kids and families the support and resources they need for success. We will do everything we can to support the social, emotional, and academic needs of students. We will do this in a brand new setting and way for us all.
I look forward to “seeing” kids and families on Tuesday. Thank you for your partnership and commitment this school year. We appreciate your patience, support, and kindness as we begin this new journey.

Hello Marquette Families!
My name is Kasey Thompson and I am so excited to be teaching fifth grade this year! This is my first year at Marquette and my eleventh year of teaching. I graduated from UW-Madison, and I love being a Badger. After my first year of teaching, I moved to the Twin Cities in Minnesota where I taught for six years. My husband, Mark, and I missed Madison so much that we decided to move back in 2017. I am also a new mom! My son, Oliver, was born on May 30th. During my free time--which is very limited these days, of course--I enjoy reading, running, playing ultimate frisbee, singing, playing piano and guitar, hiking, stargazing, learning new things, and especially DANCING. I cannot wait to get to know all of you, and I know this will be an amazing year!

My name is Jacalyn Joseph and I am thrilled to be joining the Marquette team this year. I am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Madison where I studied Special Education and Elementary Education. I love the city of Madison and could not be more excited to join such a wonderful school community. Outside of school I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going on hikes and bike rides, and reading. My favorite part about teaching is getting to meet all of the wonderful students and their families! Although I wish we could all be together in person, I'm looking forward to "meeting" everyone virtually. This year is certainly going to be an adventure, and I can't wait to get started!

My name is Haleigh Slack and I am so excited to be joining the Marquette family this year! This May, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Science in Education with certifications in both elementary education and special education. I am from Hickory Hills, IL, a southwest suburb of Chicago, but I have been a Badger fan all my life. I have a younger brother and 4 dogs! In my free time, I love to spend time with friends and family, read, be active outside, and travel.

Hello Marquette Community!
My name is Madeline Slicker and as I am writing this, I can only think how happy I am to be a new member of Marquette Elementary School. I am proud to be a part of a school that prides itself on being welcoming, diverse, and inclusive.
I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a degree in Special Education and this is my first year teaching at Marquette Elementary School. One exciting opportunity I had while attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was spending a Winterim Semester in Jamaica teaching children with disabilities. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy playing tennis, traveling, spending time with friends and family, and working on creative projects.
I know the current situation is not what many people expected, but I am confident that it is going to be a wonderful, productive, and memorable year. This is definitely a start to the school year no one will ever forget!

Hello everyone! My name is Cami Hoerth and I am the new school psychologist for Marquette. I will also be working at Hamilton Middle School this year. I just completed graduate school and couldn't be more excited to start my career at such an incredible district. I currently live on the west side of Madison with my boyfriend and my best friend from kindergarten (and her kitten). I would say my favorite activities to do are yoga, traveling, and anything outdoors (e.g. hiking, paddleboarding, kayaking, etc.). I am always looking for new activities to try out, so if anyone has any suggestions for unique activities to do around the Madison area, please let me know! I look forward to "meeting" all of you!

Welcome to the Marquette Family Virtual Learning Support Site!
Here, you will find everything you need as we learn together in this new online format. We also welcome suggestions if you would like us to include more resources. Although still under construction, please visit the Marquette Family Virtual Learning Website , to see what is available to support families & students.
As our community begins the 2020-21 school year in a virtual learning environment, students are expected to attend school virtually according to their daily class schedule. Teachers will be taking attendance every day based on student engagement in synchronous, or live, real-time learning instruction, asynchronous, or independent learning activity, or through two way communication. It is important the district continues to track attendance to promote and support academic engagement in virtual learning. Measuring attendance also helps us stay in relationship with families to connect them with resources, and to promote overall health and emotional well-being.

The procedure for excusing students from virtual learning includes using the MMSD online form, or phone call to the school attendance line 608-204-3233.

Please see the schedule below for an idea of what your child’s first day of school will look like. We invite family members to join us for one of the grade level first day Zoom meetings, either in the morning or in the evening. The Zoom links for your child’s grade level are listed below.
The main website we will be using for virtual learning is called Seesaw. We will be talking about it on the first day. If you’d like to get a preview before then, check out this video:

Chromebook Exchange and Pick up |
|
If you have not exchanged your Chromebook yet, there's still time! Exchanging will ensure you have an up-to-date device ready for virtual learning. If you did not have a district Chromebook at home in the spring or are new to the district, you can also go pick up a Chromebook next week.
Some families have chosen to use a device that they already have at home. That decision is up to each family. Some things to consider are that staff knows what the district device looks like and can do and therefore can better support it. It's also very easy for kids to log in to the district device and have the Classlink menu open right up so they can get started. If you do decide to use your own, please make sure it has a functioning camera and microphone.
To get your child a Chromebook, the makeup dates for getting one from East are September 8-11. You'll need to bring the old device (if you have one) and your child's ID number written on a piece of paper. Greetings AL Families and Prospective Families:
The last few months have been an incredible experience as I have learned about the Advanced Learning Plan, services to students, and previous work done in the Madison Metropolitan School District. I am honored to be serving as the new Advanced Learning Director and looking forward to the work ahead as we continue to work with Advanced Learning in a virtual learning environment.
With over twenty years of experience in PK-12 districts as an Assistant Principal, Principal, and Assistant Director, I am aware of the adjustment to current practices to meet the specific needs of students, the district and our families. I am proud to say that we have met compliance with the Office of Civil Right plan submitted to the Department of Instruction over the last few years. We will continue to use this plan for continued guidance for our department and for our students and families.
In recent days, Curriculum and Instruction, along with other departments at Doyle had been notified of potential internal shifts and temporary assignments that would need to be filled by members of the Central Office staff due to the Covid pandemic. As a result of these needs, some members of the Advanced Learning Department will temporarily be assigned to a virtual setting/school during our virtual period. These fantastic Advanced Learning specialists will be serving in classrooms continuing to maintain access to high quality instruction and learning.
With the acceptance of the compliance agreement from the Department of Instruction for our OCR and the needed movement at this time, our department will need to think differently about the delivery of services during this time.
Changes and What You Can Expect
- The AL Department falls directly under the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and will focus 2020-21 on the delivery of instruction in Math, Social Studies/Humanities, and English/Language Arts.
- Delivery of AL instruction will be via videotaped recordings to AL learners and students with potential-noted as Talent Development students. Talent Development students are AL learners but may be new to AL instructional services.
- Five days of videotaped lessons will be recorded on Loom and sent to grade level core teachers by Fridays to be embedded in core teacher’s lessons for the following week.

These videotaped lessons will be aligned to scopes-lesson planning developed by Curriculum and Instruction departments specifically in the areas of English/Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies/Humanities by grade levels and developed by an identified grade level group of AL specialists/Team Leaders weekly.
- Some AL students will continue to receive online instruction in accelerated mathematics by AL specialists or Teacher Leaders
- An AL specialist with English as a Second Language experience will be tied to a grade or grade levels to assist in planning lessons and creation of the videos supportive of language needs. These may be the same lessons or an extension to ensure these learners needs are addressed.
- Many AL specialists and Teacher Leaders will be housed at assigned schools for a location and will be creating videotaped lessons aligned to the scopes and sequence by a specific grade level. Schools without a specialist or TL will receive access to videotaped lessons and be covered by these available specialists for additional support. Those supports will include:
- Parent communications,
- Being a parent, student, school-building, teacher liaison
- Progress monitoring students.
We hope to continue working with our Advisory Board to evaluate this delivery process during the first quarter.
