This year Marquette will be holding both a FOOD DRIVE and an ONLINE DONATION link to support the Goodman Center’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive. The @GoodmanCommunityCenterWI is aiming to provide 4,000 families in Dane County with the groceries they need to make a full Thanksgiving dinner at home. Can you help? $90 will cover the cost of a full family feast, but any donation is appreciated and will be helpful.

Non-perishable food can be brought to school Nov 1 - 15.

We will have a collection basket in the front hall.

Monetary donations can be made directly to Goodman:

Community Read

Students have really been enjoying the community read book, Stuntboy, In the Meantime by Jason Reynolds with their class this past month. We hope you have been able to follow along and talk about some of the important topics, such as bullying and anxiety, discussed throughout the story.

To celebrate finishing this book we will be having a Community Read Family Event at Marquette Elementary School on Tuesday, November 14th from 5:00 - 6:30pm. Come celebrate finishing the story while also checking out some great work your students have been doing and enter the raffle to win a book! See this flier for more information about the event.

Book Fair

Stop by the Marquette Book Fair November 1st - 3rd. All money made at the book fair is used to support books for all students in the school. This includes things like birthday books, book giveaways during events and book clubs. Check out the book fair flier for more details about this year's book fair.

Click here to donate to the Marquette School Wide ewallet to help make sure all students get a book from the book fair

Coding Club

We are hoping to start a coding club back up in the spring. It will start Thursday, February 15th and end Thursday, May 2nd. The club will run weekly on Thursday from 2:45-3:45 in the Marquette makerspace. We are in need of a volunteer to help manage students. UW students come and teach students about scratch so that is not part of your volunteer responsibilities. Please reach out to the school LMTS, Shannon Erickson, if you’re interested in volunteering to help support this club.

Battle of the Books

All 4th and 5th graders will have the chance to participate in this book competition. They will be learning about it soon. Check out the family battle of the books website for more information.

REACH

3rd Grade: During the month of November, 3rd graders will be learning about bookcreator. A fun app which lets students easily create books and allows students to easily share them. 3rd graders will be using this app to record a class book that’s part of their unit 1 ELA performance task. Students will also learn about the database culturegrams which they will use to research places they read about in books in class.

4th Grade: During the month of November, 4th graders will finish up their scranimal poetry projects and have time in the makerspace to explore circuits. These activities are an extension of the science unit 4th graders have been working on. They will get to create a fun paper circuit activity as well!

5th Grade: During the month of November, 5th graders will learn about green screen production by researching a travel destination and creating pictures of themselves at those destinations. These skills will help students with weekly announcements that some 5th graders help create and the monologues projects they will complete for their ELA unit 1 performance task.

Music - Ms. Kazda

We have had a great start to the school year in Music classes, and it continues to be a joy to teach your children.

Creating on keyboards, drumming together, playing songs using boomwhackers, singing, and thinking critically about the role of music in expanding our worldviews, encouraging social and racial justice, and helping us make sense of our feelings and experiences has kept us engaged and busy.

In September we learned about Nimo Patel, an Indian-American musician and activist who works to spread messages of love, service, community, and hope to people around the world. He has devoted his life to empowering children and lifting up communities in need - all through music and the arts. One of our favorite songs is Planting Seeds

October brought us Jennifer Lopez, an American musician and actor who has Puerto Rican roots and helped us learn songs in Spanish. We learned about Hispanic Heritage Month and celebrated Spanish speaking people and their families living in the United States, appreciating Spanish-language songs even when we did not know all of the words. A song we enjoyed was Almost Like Praying [feat. Artists for Puerto Rico].

We also celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day on October 9, singing and including American Sign Language (ASL) while learning about the history of the Ho-Chunk people, honoring the land our school and city is on as land of the Ho-Chunk people, calling Madison Tejop (four lakes in Ho-Chunk), and finding ways we can use music to be advocates for justice and progress. Ask your child about Indigenous Peoples' Day Song for Kids.

Moving into November, we will be practicing ukuleles, singing daily, and learning about a new Musician of the Month. I'm so glad to be one of your child's teachers!

Please reach out anytime.

Lapham-Marquette Parent Teacher Group (PTG)

* We, the PTG, need to stay flexible with our community's needs. Marquette is hosting the Community Read event (see above) on the night of our usual PTG Meeting (the 2nd Tuesday of the month). During that time, we will happily answer any questions you have while enjoying each other at the family-fun event!

* Check out our other events!

* All new students to Marquette will receive a free School Pride T-Shirt from the PTG and a generous grant from the Marquette Neighborhood Association (MNA)! Families can purchase additional school-pride items on Threadless; with a portion of proceeds donated to our PTG.
