It’s important to find a way to get your child to school even when the weather is bad. If you’re having trouble getting your child to school, give the school social worker a call, we can connect you with staff members who can help problem solve.

Thank you!
On behalf of Marquette Elementary, we want thank the Wisconsin Department of Administration employees that have given generous donations to our school. Earlier this fall we received donations of school supplies for those in need and most recently the generous donations of Lands End winter gear. We were running low on many items such as mittens, so we were most grateful to receive many winter items. We are so very lucky to have the support of DoA's for our school.

Dear Families,
We had a busy month of December in Music, and 2020 will be full of musical adventures, too!
Students continued playing
ukuleles
, working on a variety of songs and challenging themselves to learn more chords, different strumming patterns, or take on leadership roles within their section.
We also worked on
keyboards
, and every student played a version of
Jingle Bells
. Reading music is a challenge, and these capable musicians are doing great things. Also, as a fun fact: Jingle Bells was originally written as a Thanksgiving song, in honor of the tradition of sleigh racing. It was called "One Horse Open Sleigh" (and later changed to its present title, which was believed to catch more people's attention). When we work on keyboards, it's primarily an independent task, so students with no piano experience are finding success alongside students who have been studying piano extensively. We're so grateful to have this keyboard lab!
Singing
has also been an important focus as we prepare for Fine Arts Night. Students are working on vocal technique, deciphering the meanings of lyrics, and singing with emotion. We can't wait to share our music with you on
Wednesday, February 26 from 5:45-7:00 p.m.
Our December
Musicians of the Month
were
Rodrigo y Gabriela
, an acoustic guitar duo from Mexico. Students were especially impressed by their technique. Rodrigo y Gabriela were our first group this year to be solely instrumental, which causes us to engage our imaginations in creating a storyline within the music.
Happy New Year, dear Marquette families! It is a joy to teach your children, and I hope to see you at Marquette's Fine Arts Night in February!

More from the Health Office - Colds & FLU
|
|
Dear Parents and Guardians:
We know that illness can strike any of us at any time, and the MMSD wants to share some simple steps you and your family can take to protect yourselves and everyone around you from serious illness, like colds and flu.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services recommends that everyone age 6 months old and older get vaccinated against the flu. The vaccine is safe and effective and can prevent long absences from school and work.
In addition, there are steps the whole family can take to prevent and stop the spread of illness. These include:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with your upper sleeve, and try to avoid touching your face with your hand.
- If you use a tissue, throw it away after one use.
- Never share drinking cups, straws, and utensils.
- When possible, avoid being exposed to people who are sick with flu-like symptoms.
- Eat nutritious meals, get plenty of rest, and do not smoke.
- Frequently clean commonly touched surfaces, like doorknobs, the refrigerator handles, your phone, and faucets.
If your child shows signs of illness, such as a high fever, cough, sneezing, or runny nose, please keep them home until 24 hours after the symptoms pass to prevent them from spreading illness to classmates and staff. You can find our policy on absences in the district handbook.
Working together, we can make this a healthy school year for everyone.
Sincerely,
Mary Hutchinson, R.N.; M.S.N. School Nurse

When is school closed due to weather?

When is school closed due to weather?
Winter weather is fast approaching, so we want to take this opportunity to provide you with information about how decisions are made and communicated when the weather is severe. The safety of our students is our top priority, and we always follow a set of guidelines to make decisions about whether school will be open or closed.
The district must make a decision that is the best for all students. We realize, at times, our decisions may not fit with your individual circumstances. Therefore, we encourage and strongly support you in making the decision that is best for your child(ren). You are always the best judge of your child's health and safety.
When schools close, many families have issues with child care. As a result, we try to keep schools open if it's safe to do so. However, as we stated at the top of this letter, parents can always make the decision to keep their child(ren) at home in bad weather.
How do we decide whether or not to close due to snow, ice and/or extreme cold?
The district monitors weather conditions and consults with meteorologists, the City of Madison, Madison Police and transportation providers. We will consider closing schools at negative 25 degrees.
We use this information to consider closing schools in cases of extreme cold, snow or other hazardous conditions. To help our families plan for any school closures, we make every effort to make a decision on closing by 9pm the evening prior.
How can you find out if schools are closed?
On days when the weather is bad, listen to any local radio or television station for information about school closing. If you provided your email address and/or mobile phone number during enrollment, you will be contacted in the morning regarding a school closing via email, phone and text message.
Opt in now to receive MMSD text messages.
You may also check
our website
.
Please note: If you'd like to receive text messages, you'll also need to provide a cell phone number during enrollment or to your school to be added in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
When schools are closed, are other activities canceled as well?
When Madison schools are closed for the day, it also means that all activities scheduled in school buildings for that day are canceled, including all MSCR programs, after school programs and athletics.
Why aren't schools dismissed early on days when the weather is bad?
Generally, once the school day has started, MMSD schools will not dismiss early to avoid complications with transportation and child care arrangements. However, if your schedule allows and if you feel your child will be safer at home, you can pick your child up before the end of the school day.
We appreciate your understanding of the difficulties in making this decision, and your support in helping your child get to school safely on winter days. Please know that the safety of all of our students is our first priority when making all weather-related decisions.
