A Message from Principal Miles

Dear Shepherd Families,

Another successful school year is coming to an end! Reflecting on the past school year makes me realize how fortunate we are at Shepherd Elementary. Our school has been successful due to the wonderful, collaborative partnership between students, staff members, and parents. Our students continue to make academic gains each year due to the excellent teaching from our wonderful staff and the support from our parents. We must recognize our students for their perseverance, hard-work and effort displayed throughout the school year.

A sincere thank you is extended to our wonderful PTA and executive board; you have provided excellent leadership and support to the PTA committees, the school staff and administration, and most importantly to the students at Shepherd Elementary. Thank you to all parents on the PTA and the various committees and volunteers for your endless contributions and dedication of time to provide beneficial activities, programs and events to our school. Without your support and dedication we would not have been able to have such wonderful and successful school activities.

Shepherd Family, thank you! This school community is an incredible place, and I am humbled to have had the opportunity to serve you since October 2008. I will embrace the opportunities for our paths to cross again. Continue to push your children to set high personal goals, to be a person of great character, and to put forth their personal best every day. Our children will do great things in life!

Please enjoy the change of pace that the summer brings. Have a happy, relaxing, and safe summer with your children.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Sincerely,
Jamie B. Miles

End of the year updates and reminders . . .

Staffing Changes
Please join me in saying farewell to two staff members who will be moving on to new experiences and challenges. We would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment to our students during their time at Shepherd. Ms. Ashley Hart, one of our kindergarten teachers, is moving to Florida. Mr. Irby, our art teacher, will be staying in the DMV area continuing to showcase his love for art. I wish all of them the very best in their future endeavors.

Teachers and Class
Though I will be departing at the end of the school year, we have already started the  planning and preparation process for the 2015-2016 SY. One of the planning areas is to ensure our staffing exemplifies the very best of educators who demonstrate a passion for teaching and learning. Next year there will be: 1 PS class, 2 PK classes, 3 Kindergarten classes and 2 classes at each of the remaining grades. We have total of six vacancies (two regular teachers, one art teacher and three additional teacher assistants) that need to be filled. The goal is to fill these vacancies by July 1, 2015.

Teachers and Student Assignments
Teacher grade level placement and student class assignments will be announced later this summer.

Registration
If you have not registered, please do so prior to the last day of school. Waiting to register  delays our ability to finalize teacher and student assignments.

Thank You! Thank you! Thank you!
Thank you for the beautiful flowers and gift card. It was a pleasant surprise from the "Shepherd  Parents". Hubby and I will enjoy a nice dinner one evening in the next few weeks. Thank you again for thinking of me!

Student Scoop
Submitted by: Kennedy Mack

The first student scoop is on May 20, 2015, the third grade French class put on the play -

"Cendrillon".  Cendrillon is Cinderella in French.  Tsitsi Shabazz played Cendrillon.  The play was really good and it had lots of actors and French and English narrators.  We had fun working on the play and we had costumes and props.

The second scoop is the third graders are studying healthy bodies.  To have healthy bodies, you have to eat healthy foods so on May 22, 2015 we got to make parfaits for our unit. A parfait is yogurt with fruits on top with some granola.   We had a lot of different fruits like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries to make tasty parfaits.

My final scoop of the year is on Tuesday June 9, 2015 there was the Specialists Showcase.  All of the specialist teachers took a grade and they did song and dance activities with the students.  The fourth graders thru kindergartens did something with the language teachers. The pre-k and pre-school students did activities with the librarian.  The fifth graders did an activity with the PE teacher.  All of the performances were awesome.

This is your last student scoop and I hope you enjoyed the student scoops.  Have a great summer and see you next school year!

A Note from New PTA Presidents
Thank you to the parents, teachers, and staff members who participated in the principal selection process last week. The panel has  submitted its recommendations to DCPS.  Chancellor Kaya He nderson and the DCPS team will make the final selection.  We hope to hear about our new principal in the next 1-2 weeks.

Over the summer, the PTA will host summer playdates at the playground down by the Shepherd field. This is a great opportunity for new families to meet current Shepherd families and for all of us to reconnect with friends.  We will also have PTA officers at the playdates - come with your ideas for next school year!

This time of transition in the leadership at Shepherd is an opportunity for all of us to refocus on how we can support the teachers, staff and new leadership at Shepherd.  We are all committed to ensuring that our children receive a high quality education and an educational experience that will help them grow and thrive.  Think about how you can contribute to Shepherd life and culture next year.  We will be in touch!

Have a wonderful and restful summer!
