The following letter from Ms. Brawley was distributed on paper in backpacks last week:

PYP Update
October is National Bullying Prevention Month!

Throughout this Month, students have been learning about Bullying through stories, scenarios and discussions. The theme for this month has been The End of Bullying Begins with Me.  Students have been learning about what bullying looks like, what it sounds like and what it means to be a bystander.  Our staff and teachers will be participating in a Bullying Workshop on October 28.  Please look out for the Parent Bullying Workshop coming up in November.  The date is to be confirmed. More details will follow.

This Friday, October 30 will be a half day of school. Students will be dismissed at 12:15 PM. Our first Awards Assembly will also take place on October 30, 2015. There will be three Assemblies:
  • Kindergarten through 2nd Grade at 9:00AM
  • 3rd through 5th Grade at approximately 9:50 AM
  • Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten beginning at approximately 10:50AM
Shepherd Spirit Week: October 26 - 30
A long-standing Shepherd tradition is to celebrate "Spirit Week" in the last week of October.  Whether you are new to Shepherd or just need a reminder; here are some suggestions for getting in the  spirit :

Monday - Sports Day
Students can show their love for a favorite sport or team in fan wear on Monday.  Student athletes can wear their own sports gear too!

Tuesday - Character Costume Day
Celebrate a love of reading by dressing as a favorite character from a  book .  (Please, no masks.)  Consider tucking that book in your child's backpack for free reading time.

Wacky Wednesday
As the name implies, this is students' opportunity to show the wacky side of their personality! From backwards clothes to mismatched shoes,  almost anything goes - with parental discretion.

Thursday - Twin Day
Find a buddy and dress alike.  If there's someone new in your child's class, it might be a great opportunity to make a new friend.

Friday - Pajama Day
The last day of the grading period is only half a day.  Almost isn't worth getting dressed... so, don't. Students can wear PJs to school instead!

Shepherd Book Fair
Thank you to all the families who supported our school by shopping at our book fair last week, the book fair was a great success! If you did not get a chance to purchase books at the book fair, you may still purchase books online until October 27. All book sales online will ship to Shepherd and be delivered to your child early in November. Happy reading!

Self Defense Class with Mom
The Georgia Avenue Family Support Collaborative is one of our Shepherd ES partners. The GAFSC have a variety of resources that are always available to our students & families. We have been offered an opportunity to participate in a self defense class hosted by Prestige Sport Martial Arts.  Master Justin Ladson will be the martial arts instructor.

Shepherd ES will be hosting a " Self Defense with Mom class". This is a one time FREE introductory class on Friday, October 30th @ 12:30 PM.

We invite our "mommies & daughters" to "Show Up, Stand Out" (SUSO) with the GAFSC, come and meet Master Justin Ladson, take the class, learn something new & have fun. This is a mommie & daughter event so we want a mom & daughter team.   Participants should wear comfortable exercise clothes & perhaps bring a towel & a bottle of water.

A Message from the PTA
Great to see everyone at the first PTA meeting of the year last Wednesday!  Congratulations to Jennell Alexander who will serve as 1st Vice President of the PTA for the remainder of the year.

Loose Change Fundraiser
The holiday season.  For many of us, it's too many reasons to spend too much money and eat too many goodies from Halloween through New Year's Day.  But some families in our community aren't worried about over-indulging.  They're worried about just getting by.  Shepherd's annual Loose Change Fundraiser is our opportunity to help, while offering our children a valuable lesson in caring.

Throughout November, Shepherd students are encouraged to bring their loose change to school.  Nothing big; just loose change (though we'll gladly accept something larger).  Homeroom classes will collect the change throughout the month and the class that collects the most will win a pizza party courtesy of the PTA.  It's that simple.

Proceeds from the campaign are split between the PTA and local families in need.  Watch for additional details from Loose Change chair Leonie Stephenson in your child's backpack and next week's Mustang.  Loose Change starts the first week of November.
