[Mom & Dad at Jones Beach, NY 1936]
Did they meet? Pass one another between classes?
Just might have.
Tony's Dad, Stephen Anthony Fauci and my mother, Lena Zelda Porgoman, attended the Columbia College of Pharmacy, 1929-1931. Here's Lena (below, behind the L in Alpha) Vice-Regina of her women's sorority and faculty in 1929. Mom arrived as a Polish Jewish immigrant to NYC in 1910 and grew up on the Lower East Side.
Stephen Antonio Fauci - father of Anthony Stephen Fauci, MD. Both Brooklyn natives. Stephen opened the family drug store in the Bensonhurst neighborhood where young Tony had his first exposure to the health care profession. Tony is named after his Italian immigrant grandfather, Antonio Fauci. Our courageous director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases turns 80 this Christmas Eve. Let's send him lots of love and appreciation!
Mom Never Realized Her Dream to Have Her Own Drug Store
Upon graduation she expected to receive the financing from her mother, my Grandma Yidis, but it wasn't forthcoming. She did work in the laboratory of Schieffelin & Company in Manhattan where she met Harold Nolan, a graduate in manufacturing chemistry from Pratt Institute, and they got married on Sept. 5, 1931 at Brooklyn Borough Hall. At the time, her parents were already divorced and mom was living with Grandpa Beryl, a baker and union organizer, in Jersey City.
Embodiment of Jesuit Values, Anthony Stephen Fauci After graduating from Regis High School in Manhattan, Fauci attended the College of the Holy Cross, graduating with a BA in classics on a pre-med track. Fauci then attended medical school at Cornell University Medical College where he graduated first in his class with a Doctor of Medicine in 1966. He credits his Jesuit education at Regis and Holy Cross with his commitment to the values of science, the truth and public service.
Let's find your local hero.
