My Father’s Book: The Gift That Keeps on Giving

As I share in the introduction to my father, Raymond A. Lambert’s, interview about his book, Highgate Gleanings (Modern Memoirs 2020), working with him on that project was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I treasure the copies we now have at home, filled with my dad’s diverse range of writings, photographs, and even personal flourishes like his handwritten epigraph, maps of his hometown drawn by his brother, and most special of all, a Legacy Letter that never fails to move me to tears when I read its loving words to my siblings and me and our partners and children.

Through editorial, design, and production phases, I learned so much about my father’s life, our heritage, and also about running a publishing business, since his was one of the first books I worked on from start to finish after my husband, Sean, and I purchased Modern Memoirs in 2019. Helping my dad realize his vision for his book established a solid foundation for me to truly understand how much time, effort, creativity, and love people bring to their memoirs and family-history books. Today, that understanding informs how I lead our staff in helping all of our clients create their books, with a deep awareness of how important and special each volume is to each person.

January is historically our company’s busiest time for signing new projects, as people embark on the new year with a sense of hope and possibility. I hope that if you’ve been considering a memoir or family history book, you’ll seize the moment to contact Modern Memoirs so that we can help you realize your vision with the creation of a beautiful, custom, heirloom-quality book that your loved ones will treasure for generations to come.

I say this not only in my professional capacity, but also as a daughter who is forever grateful that my dad wrote his one-of-a-kind book for me and the rest of our family. It is the gift that keeps on giving, a sharing from his heart, a record of our heritage, and an invitation to follow his example in reflecting on our own lives for meaning, purpose, and love.

Happy Solstice!

Card design by Book Designer Nicole Miller, winter solstice 2025

Dating back to 1994, Modern Memoirs’ practice of sending out winter and summer solstice greetings began with our founder, Kitty Axelson-Berry, and it remains a cherished tradition today. Earlier this month, we sent out hundreds of beautiful winter solstice cards created by Book Designer Nicole Miller and pictured above.

If you did not receive a card and would like us to send one in the mail, please contact us below to make a request. Or, let us know if you would like extras to share with people you know who might be interested in Modern Memoirs’ services.

“If any parent-and-child pair reading this blog has the inclination to work together on a project like this, don’t hesitate! The gifts of writing, reminiscing, and sharing will be ones you’ll always treasure, in addition to the book you create…”

A Toast to Family History

By Ali de Groot

“Why write a memoir or family history? Because it’s bigger than you, and it is your gift to the past, present, and future, and it will come around again just when you think everyone has forgotten…”

Solstice Table

By Anne Eastman Yeomans

I have set a table for ten.

Family and friends

will gather in the morning.

I, up late, moving tables,

search the house

for enough chairs,

take tarnished silver

out of the green box

at the back of the closet,

merge family treasures,

since all but two teaspoons

were lost in a children’s

sand box long ago.

I iron wrinkled cloths,

smooth and count napkins,

check the cupboards

for ten white cups.

I step back to look—

and realize I am not alone

in this sleeping house.

My mother is by my side.

Grandmothers

and great grandmothers

fill this room,

legions of ancient ones

with gnarled hands

and blazing eyes,

all awake

in the long dark night

preparing the table

for the morning meal

and the return of the light.
