2016 Already?

Hello Everyone!

Well it was a different Christmas for me.  As I mentioned in my last newsletter, both my parents have had serious health issues and my mom passed away from colon cancer on the 28th.  I have been making monthly visits to Indiana since May but she called my sisters and me and asked us to come on the 23rd so we were able to be with her those last five days.  I hurt for myself and my family but especially my dad as he adjusts to life without her.  I know all of you have lost loved ones and understand our grief.  It has been a good wake up call for me about what is really important ...loving and serving one another.

I'm optimistic that 2016 will bring better things. Thank you all so much for being a part of my life and for your trust in me.  I'm very aware that it's not easy to let a stranger (and we all agree that I'm a little strange, right?!) into your home but you have all been so gracious and patient. I'm humbled by your kindness and am truly excited to help you in the new year.

Hugs to each and every one of you!

News You Can Use

Not sure this really is classified as "news" you can use, but sometimes all I need to start my day is a smile.  And since my introduction was a little heavy I'll lighten the mood with this cute little remake of Let it Snow that another organizer from NAPO (the National Association of Professional Organizers) wrote.

Let it Snow

Oh, I'm clutter and I am frightful,
I make your home less than delightful
And since I've no place to go
I just grow and I grow and I grow!
I don't show a sign of stopping
'Cause your stuff you just keep plopping
On surfaces high and low
So I grow, and I grow, ho ho ho!
When I finally drive you nuts,
Toss excuses and all of the 'but" s
"But I'm busy", "But I don't have time"...
Don't you see how I weigh on your mind?
So, come on and just say "No more" now
And in case you just don't know how
It's easier than you know-
Help me go, just say no, stop the woe!
Call for help from a friend or pro
Start to toss, sort and stop the inflow
Get the stuff off your tables and floor
Then your house will be cluttered no more.
So when snow falls and you're stuck inside
Then your home won't make you go hide
You'll enjoy sitting by the fire
Clutter's gone, just relax and admire!

Makeover of the Month

This is a client who wanted help with a garage makeover.  She really did it up right; new flooring, new paint and new cabinets.  It was a fun project for me because it was truly a total transformation.
I also love this project because it shows how people really live...not the before and afters you see in magazines where there are five coordinated shirts and six pairs of shoes in the finished closet! No wonder those always look amazing.  But this is real life!

What a difference cabinetry makes!

We really didn't do much purging.  Just sorted and labeled this wall.

We added a slat wall here to get all the tools off the ground.

About Yikes Organizing

I wish I could say that I've always wanted to be a professional organizer but the truth is that I'm a late bloomer.  I didn't start writing until my thirties and didn't start Yikes until my forties.  I like changing things up and one day realized I had the ideal background for this kind of work.  For one thing we have six kids (no that isn't a typo) and have moved 16 times!  I have lived in really big houses and really small apartments.  I've hoarded (only baby clothes, but still) and I've purged.  But I did finally come to realize what many of you already know...  "Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans." :)

Obviously organizing isn't rocket science but sometimes you need help getting started or the accountability that an organizer provides.  That's what Yikes Organizing is all about.  We will get you from "good grief" to "gorgeous" or at the very least from "disaster" to "delightful."
