I am BEYOND excited to announce that Breathe
– a new musical I co-wrote – is going to have its virtual world premiere on 5/14 – and that my readers have the chance to get tickets RIGHT NOW before anyone else. You’re the first to see this trailer
. I can’t wait to hear what you think!
This journey began when my co-librettist, Tim McDonald, and I wanted to use the arts to make sense of the chaos happening around us. Why musical theatre? Well, during this pandemic, we have all seemed to share the same anxiety and fear and frustration, even though we are all separated. What’s theatre, after all, but a person alone in their own seat, experiencing the same feeling as the person beside them, due to what’s happening onstage? Since the entire industry was decimated by COVID, we wanted to financially and artistically support as many theatre makers as possible -- from stagehands to music directors to songwriters to directors to technicians to orchestrators to copyists and more.
The result is Breathe -- which follows five couples grappling with the impact of COVID on their lives – covering everything from parenting in COVID, to Black Lives Matter protests, to saying goodbye to a spouse via Zoom. And like all my books – there are lighthearted moments, heartbreaking moments…and a killer twist. The cast includes Broadway legends galore: Tony-winners Kelli O’Hara and Brian Stokes-Mitchell, Tony-nominee Denée Benton, Patti Murin, Colin Donnell, Matt Doyle, Daniel Yearwood and more.
The irony of creating a musical about the pandemic during a pandemic has not been lost on us, but the challenges are well worth the magical moments we’ve experienced – from seeing our work come to life in three dimensions to finding a way to stream it so anyone can view it anywhere to watching every single actor and stagehand and director fight back tears the moment they stepped onto a stage for the first time in a year. I’m so proud of this one, and I hope you will find it as healing and as hopeful as we intended.
