Issue 1 October 2025

New Website - New Newsletter

Welcome to the first Issue of my Newsletter "The Good Oil". Having just revamped my studio website "Original Oils" and with the holiday season approaching I decided to emerge from beneath the bushel and showcase my gallery of paintings which now amount to over 160 works!!

To the uninitiated, which to an ageing artist seems to be the majority of people, "The good oil" is a slang phrase meaning reliable, genuine, or true information. It is a slightly informal and dated expression, often used in Australia, that means the information is trustworthy and valuable.

I hope you enjoy this first Issue and invite your feedback by email.

Exhibitions

In the last 12 months Original Oils works have been exhibited on six occasions. Starting with Strathnairn arts and followed immediately by two weeks at Gorman Arts. The exhibition moved to Merimbula (Twyford Hall) in January of this year.

More recently I have exhibited at the Yarralumla Gallery and Oaks Brasserie in Weston Park, Saint Paul's Church, Manuka Spring Festival, and a pop-up Gallery in Cooleman Court in Weston Creek.

As New exhibitions evolve, I will advise you of them in this newsletter. At present I am toying with a novel idea of a floating exhibition at the Kingston boat Harbour in Canberra. Other plans are also afoot!

In re-launching my website, I have divided the gallery into "Collections" covering "Shores", "Villages", "Meadows", "Bearing Witness" and "Experimental".

My "Best laid plan!" is to update the collections as new works appear.

The Cart and Checkout Sections are operational, and I encourage both online purchases or by direct email contact with me.

The Perfect Aussie Christmas Present!

I recently had a pop-up Gallery in a local shopping centre in Canberra titled "Little Canberra by the sea" displaying paintings of favourite locations on the New South Wales South Coast. The title I used is a term often used by Canberra's who claimed to constitute the majority of ratepayers on the South Coast!

In the coming weeks and over the holiday season that is where many Canberrans will spend per summer.

This year I am suggesting that a painting of South Coast favourite beach would make an excellent Christmas present; by effectively taking your beach memories home with you!

There are 62 paintings in the "Shores" collection of my website.

Until Christmas evening all of paintings for sale in the "Shores Collection" have been reduced by 25% and can be purchased online on the website.

Yarralumla Gallery Spring Exhibition - Winner!

At some of my exhibitions, I offer a free painting today to visitors who provide details in a bowl at the venue. This why many of you are receiving this newsletter.

At the Yarralumla Gallery Exhibition a free painting "Binh Lap Beach, Vietnam" from my Wet Sands Series was won by a lady who had been visiting from Sydney. She is delighted with her acquisition.

Artist to Artist

As an individual emerging artist, there is a tendency to work in isolation until eventually connecting up with the Art community in your region. Canberra has many Art hubs with several providing in-house Studios for working Artists. Inevitably, however, these organisations are well established making it difficult for fresh talent to gain access to "the system".

I'm interested in establishing a dialogue between Artists who may be in my situation who are not in the system but who wish to communicate or collaborate. Please email me with your thoughts.

Well that's all for this first Issue. I hope you enjoy it and look forward to contacting you again soon.

Cheers
