O God, do not keep silence; do not hold your peace or be still, O God!
Psalm 83:1
Even though thousands of years have passed since the psalmist Asaph composed Psalm 83, I have some idea of how he felt. Asaph pleads with God, “Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold your peace, and do not be still!” Obviously, Asaph was angry and frustrated at how the enemies of Israel were treating God and those who believed in God. Asaph wanted God to intervene.
Who of us have not been overwhelmed by life? Sometimes the path is clear, and God is so close. Sometimes fear, doubt, pain, and grief can harden our hearts. In the midst of our pain, we can’t seem to find our way. We know God loves us and offers us hope and renewal but “where are you God?”
For me, the last two years have been difficult. We have been separated from family and friends, as well as our communities and churches. There has been so much death, sadness and unkindness. From the fires, the floods, and the injustice, my heart hurts. “I need you God. Where are you?”
I have come to realize that just because I can’t seem to find God does not mean that God’s presence is not active in my life or in the world. I think it is God’s desire to give all of us assurance and peace. I can hear the words of Jesus, “Do not let your heart be troubled. My peace I give to you, my peace I leave with you.” You are all my children and I love you.
May the peace of God dwell in our hearts.
