Read: Psalm 26
singing aloud a song of thanksgiving,
and telling all your wondrous deeds.
Psalm 26:7
In the recent Sights and Sounds of Advent worship service, participants were asked to share a memory that reminded them of Advent seasons past. Our group remembered trees and sweet smells and twinkling lights, but mostly we talked about the music of the season. These songs, many of which we only sing during this particular season can bring to mind such specific memories. They remind us of God’s wondrous deeds and connect us to years past when we have waited through the season of Advent and seen God’s goodness in the face of the Christ child.
They also connect us to the generations of faithful saints who have come before us. We join with the cloud of witnesses stretching back to the psalmist himself as we proclaim that through the darkness is coming a great light. Come, thou long expected Jesus, we sing. Oh come, Emmanuel.
As we start to turn our hearts from these weeks of waiting and anticipate the coming celebration of Christmas, may we all join the Psalmist in singing aloud with thanksgiving. Oh, come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
