Issue 219 | April 17, 2025 | | A message from TTC CEO Greg Percy | | |
At this week’s TTC Board meeting, Commissioners welcomed Joe Mihevc to his first meeting as a citizen Commissioner. The Board elected Mr. Mihevc as Vice-Chair to replace outgoing Vice-Chair Joanne De Laurentiis. Mr. Mihevc is a former City Councillor and was TTC Vice-Chair from 2006 to 2009.
The Board also established a new Strategic Planning Committee and appointed the following members: Alejandra Bravo (Chair), Jamaal Myers, Fenton Jagdeo, Joe Mihevc, and Dianne Saxe.
The Committee will focus on managing strategic planning and priorities. This includes advancing two strategic directions in the Corporate Plan – Attract New Riders, Retain Customer Loyalty, and Place Transit at the Centre of Toronto’s Future Mobility.
Please see below for highlights of Commission decisions approved on April 16.
Next week is Earth Week
Tuesday, April 22 is Earth Day.
As we all know, public transit plays a crucial role in fighting climate change by shifting trips away from personal automobiles and toward low-carbon modes of transportation. Alongside, helping to reduce emissions city-wide, the TTC remains committed to minimizing its environmental impact.
Our Innovation and Sustainability Strategy, introduced in 2024, will guide the TTC in meeting its commitment to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 or sooner, as part of the City’s TransformTO Climate Action Plan. The strategy also lays out actions the TTC will take to reduce consumption, protect the natural ecosystem, and build climate resilience.
As CEO, I’m proud to support our Strategy as well as numerous other initiatives that improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and use renewable energy sources.
Steps for Life charity walk
As part of our upcoming Health and Safety Week campaign, I want to invite everyone to join the Steps for Life charity walk on April 27. The five-kilometre walk supports families impacted by a workplace fatality or life-altering injury. Look for more information about this and other events across our internal communications channels, including the Safety and Environment intranet page.

Reducing consumption and protecting natural ecosystems
In the third week of Earth Month, we’re highlighting TTC’s commitment to go beyond climate mitigation and adaptation. Central to our mission is the transition to a circular economy, aligned with Toronto's goal of zero waste by 2030. The TTC is driving this change by promoting sustainable consumption, reducing water usage, and improving waste management practices.
Equally important is our dedication to protecting natural ecosystems, including improving air and water quality, controlling erosion, restoring habitats, and supporting climate regulation. We're also revising landscaping and construction procedures to align with green practices.
This holistic approach ensures the future availability of resources, reduces strain on the planet, and supports healthy ecosystems for all life. Read more in the TTC's Innovation and Sustainability Strategy.
Week three challenge: Reduce energy consumption by turning off lights and appliances when not in use

Week three of Records and Information Management Month is all about emails
Do you receive a lot of emails that need to be documented and saved to accurately capture business decisions? Our electronic email system is not designed to be a recordkeeping system! Instead, upload emails directly from your Outlook into one of your SharePoint libraries by following the FAQ: How do I upload one or multiple emails at once and also apply metadata?
By uploading directly from Outlook, the system will automatically capture relevant information such as who the information was sent to, who it was sent by, any attachment included, and the date and time the email was sent.
Important to remember: Email messages are classified and retained based on business content, not format.

TTC employees graduate from Leadership Advantage Training Program
On April 9, 107 TTC employees graduated from the 2024 Leadership Advantage training program. Employees were joined by their managers and executives to celebrate their achievements.
Leadership Advantage was first launched by Employee Development in 2017 and is TTC’s flagship leadership skills development program. This cutting-edge course blends webinars, in-class sessions, readings, and group discussions with a practical focus, allowing participants to apply their learnings on the job.
The program is updated annually to align with current workplace trends. Employee Development Specialists Alan Lyons and Dustin Manley have already begun designing the 2025 Leadership Advantage curriculum, which will focus on Strategic Thinking skills and result in an innovative, cross-functional team capstone project, all supported by the use of Generative AI tools.
Stay tuned for information on next year’s program, and congrats to the 2024 graduates!

Celebrating Vaisakhi at the TTC
The Diversity, Human Resources, Human Rights and Investigation teams joined frontline employees Amritpal Singh, Davinder Singh and Chasminder Bhela on work location visits to celebrate Vaisakhi and connect directly with employees.
These visits created space for meaningful conversations about the significance of Vaisakhi and shared important information with employees about wearing the Kirpan at work. This work reflects our ongoing commitment to building a workplace where culture, identity, inclusion and belonging are respected and celebrated.
Engagement opportunities like these strengthen connections across the TTC and remind us that inclusion begins with understanding and grows through everyday actions.

Linden Chance - Technical Instructor, Operations Training Centre
| | |
Linden Chance’s journey at the TTC reflects his dedication to both personal growth and the development of others. With a background in aviation, Linden transitioned seamlessly into the transit industry when he joined the TTC in June 2003. Bringing 26 years of experience in aircraft maintenance, he initially started as a Rail Vehicle Mechanic at Wilson Carhouse. His expertise and passion for the industry quickly led him to the role of Rail Vehicle Analyzer and, later, to his current position as a Technical Instructor in April 2005.
As a Technical Instructor, Linden trains employees on various rail vehicles, mentors new instructors, and continually improves TTC’s technical programs. He is particularly proud of his role in delivering the first Subway Vehicle Technician’s (SVT) Program at TTC and leading the development of the Toronto Rocket Technical Training standards.
“I enjoy mentoring new instructors and delivering our technical programs to new employees at the TTC,” he shared. “I appreciate working in a diverse city like Toronto.”
Outside of work, Linden enjoys spending time with his family and friends, exercising and tending to his garden.
