In Memory of Jane Thomas, MOA Board Member

It is with profound sadness that we share the devastating news of the passing of beloved Mystic Ocean Adventures (MOA) board member Jane Thomas on January 18, 2026.

This is not just a loss for MOA, her passing is a tremendous loss for the local sailing community, the women's and youth sailing communities, Channel Islands Yacht Club, Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club, her family, and all of her many friends.

While we know her spirit is now free, we will so miss Jane, her positivity, her strength, her kindness, and her steady hand. We just wish we had so many more years to share with her.

Fair winds and following seas, Jane.

J.M.W. Turner's magnificent oil painting, "The Fighting Temeraire" (1838), is far more than just a beautiful seascape. It is a poignant elegy, a meditation on the inexorable march of progress, and a powerful symbol of a nation in transition.

At its heart, the painting depicts the HMS Temeraire, a grand old warship that distinguished itself in the Battle of Trafalgar, being towed by a diminutive, smoke-belching paddle-wheel steam tug to a breaking yard in Rotherhithe. The setting sun casts a fiery glow across the sky and water, bathing the scene in a sense of both splendor and melancholy.

Turner masterfully captures this moment of profound change. "The Fighting Temeraire" is not just a historical record; it is a powerful lament for a bygone era and a shrewd observation on the irreversible march of progress. It invites us to reflect on what we gain and what we lose as societies evolve, making it as relevant today as it was nearly two centuries ago.
