Greetings!
Back in 2016, IMO issued guidelines "to facilitate the use and acceptance of electronic certificates." However, we observe that to date, most maritime organisations still operate with paper-based certificates, even though the use of electronic certificates represents a more secure alternative.
This slow adoption of electronic certificates increases risks related to cybersecurity and fraud. IMO has stated that these issues risk undermining the STCW convention.
At Navozyme, we view a certificate not as a paper document but rather as a representation of critical data from verified sources.
In this and following issues of N-EWS, we take a closer look at the evolution of certificates, from paper to the BEE.
