N&R Publication Student Story: Cutting-Edge Technology
Digital literacy increases access to jobs and promotions for adult learners. Digital literacy also increases parents’ capacity to assist their children with distance learning. Noor Hezam and Janice Crisostomo (not pictured) are both enrolled in technology-based classes at adult schools in the Bay Area. In their respective classes, they are learning how to create and edit Google slides, documents and spreadsheets, and more. Both women credit patient and understanding teachers, and helpful tutorials for their success in their technology-based classes. Read more about their stories and the impact it has made not only on their learning, but on their children’s’ learning.

PPIC: Geography of Educational Attainment in California
The attainment of a college education has been the economic driver for Californians. However, educational attainment varies widely across the state’s diverse regions. While 34% of California adults age 25 and older have at least a bachelor’s degree, the PPIC Geographical Educational Attainment in California interactive map shows that rates vary from 13% in Lassen County to 60% in Marin County. Generally, PPIC sees higher levels of educational attainment in coastal and higher-income counties and lower levels in inland and rural counties. Read more about educational attainment across regions and more.

Hanover Research: Strategies to Launch New Rural and Community Centers
In their latest publication, Hanover Research addressed Client Institution’s interest in exploring how peer institutions established their rural and community centers, including strategies, challenges, financial considerations, and practice to connect academic programs with community partners. To address the research objectives, Hanover Research conducted twelve in-depth interviews with stakeholders involved in launching or running rural or community focused centers at their institutions. The research key findings included:
- Centers provide a range of services to their communities.
- Participants attribute their success to having identified, engaged, and partnered with a wide range of external stakeholders, who consequently supported their centers.
- Centers cultivate partnerships with internal stakeholders at their institutions.
- Centers have implemented multiple funding strategies.
- A common challenge for participants when launching their centers was gaining the trust of communities, who often consider them “outsiders.”
- Participants struggle with the uncertainties caused by the pandemic.
