Nancy Walton
Watercolors
April 12th, 7:30 - 9:00 pm
Newton Senior Center
345 Walnut St, Newtonville
A graduate of Trinity College, Hartford, CT, Nancy began her painting career in the mid-eighties, painting in oils in the field of Decorative Arts. After several years, she gravitated to watercolors, studying with Nancy Sargent Howell. Subsequently, she has studied under George Shed, portrait painter Robert Cormier, Australian painters Alvaro Castagnet and Joseph Zbukvic, Mary Whyte, Paul George, John Salminen, Edward Minchin and Eric Wiegardt.
Nancy believes that a successful painting is one which both pleases the eye and touches something deep within the soul of the viewer. Though primarily a representational painter, she explores different genres and subject matter, depending on what she is trying to achieve, and what catches her eye, constantly challenging herself. This has also taken her into working in oils from time to time, as inspiration calls.
Nancy is a member of the Copley Society of Boston, a Signature Member of the New England Watercolor Society, a Master Artist at the Cape Cod Art Assoc., as well as a member of the Needham Art Assoc., the Newton Watercolor Society, North River Art Assoc. and the Duxbury Art Assoc. She is an exhibiting artist at the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard. She has received numerous awards over the past several years.
During the school year, Nancy teaches watercolor classes in Needham and at Motherbrook Community Arts Center in Dedham. Her work can be seen on her website
www.nancywalton.com and she can be reached at nbmwalton@verizon.net

NOTE from our NAA President
|
Spring is gearing up after a few stormy winter weeks in mid-March.
April is a busy month for many of us with Newton Open Studios.
Please have your friends and family tour the city to see the many talented artists.
Newton Open Studios is Saturday April 7, from 11 to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 8, from 11 to 5 p.m. Please come support the arts.
On Saturday, April 14, there will be an Open House at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI), on Herrick Road, Newton Center, from 2 to 4 p.m. Please stop by to experience the NAA exhibit in the magnificent building that houses BPSI. An NAA member will be there to host the Open House.
New members, watch for a call for art for our annual New Member Show. This year it will run the month of June. The application will be on the website by mid-April. You will be notified by email. This is an awards show and the awards will be given at our Soiree on Sunday, June 3rd.
As mentioned above, this year our Soiree will be at the Scandinavian Cultural Center on Sunday, June 3rd. A wine and cheese social hour will be from 6 to 7. During this time we will present the scholarship awards to chosen Newton high school seniors, and celebrate the winners of the New Member Show. The deadline for signing up for the Soiree will be Saturday, May 19. The cost for this year's Soiree will be $45. We pay $60 per person for the event and the NAA subsidizes part of the cost. This year we are happy to offer an "early bird special." If you purchase your tickets before May 5, the price will be last year's price: $35. Watch for the invitations in an email around the middle of April.
At last it's April. Feel the sun's warmth. Get your hands dirty in the garden, or get messy by creating your art.

Weightless:
Martha Brill, James Varnum, and Sharon Whitham
On view: Friday, April 6 - Thursday, May 3, 2018
Opening reception: Friday, April 6, 6-8PM
Artist Talk: Thursday, April 26, 6-7 PM
The New Art Center is pleased to present
Weightless, an exhibition featuring work by Martha Brill, James Varnum, and Sharon Whitham. Using diverse materials, including acrylics, inks, and watercolors, these three artists create work that explores stark contrasts - of place, material, and spirit.
Martha Brill, Nebula Series #5, acrylic and India ink
James Varnum, Desert Pool, watercolor and ink on TerraSkin,
Sharon Whitham, Rock Meditation #1, monotype, oil on paper
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The work in this exhibition was created by three NAC students, each occupied with stark contrasts - of place, material, and spirit.
Martha Brill explores space and place on both the macro and the micro level. Her
Nebula Series
paintings explore the vastness of the universe and the world of distant galaxies, while her
Habitat Series
of small wooden houses represents the world we can control and design. Experimental watercolorist
James Varnum uses a variety of materials and tools, such as bubble wrap, salt, squeegees and combs, to create texture and move pigment across his compositions. He finishes with lines and marks in ink or graphite, emphasizing the topography of each painting.
Sharon Whitham focuses on the paradox of permanence and impermanence in her monotype prints of stone cairns. The translucent piles of balanced rock achieve a weightless transcendence that simultaneously lifts and grounds our spirits.
