Dear NAA Members and Friends,
It was an event that captured the imagination of the world. In April 2021, NASA's Mars helicopter, Ingenuity, became the first aircraft in history to make a powered, controlled flight on another planet. Join NAA and the National Aviation Hall of Fame on July 14 for our tenth webinar, Ingenuity Mars Helicopter: How did they do that? Hear from MiMi Aung and the team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who made this seemingly impossible mission possible. Register today... you don't want to miss this dynamic discussion!

For almost the entire history of powered flight, NAA has been the caretaker of many of the nation's and the world's most prestigious aviation awards. Part of NAA's mission is identifying and recognizing those who have contributed to the "art, sport and science of aviation and space flight to the United States." The nomination period is now open for the Distinguished Statesman and Stateswoman of Aviation Award, the Brewer Trophy, and the Public Benefit Flying Awards. The deadline to submit a nomination for these awards is August 31, 2021. Additional information, including award criteria, nomination guidelines, and a list of past recipients, is available on the NAA website.

The Aero Club of Southern California hosted its 42nd Annual Howard Hughes Memorial Award presentation on June 17. Founded by Hughes' first cousin, William R. Lummis, in 1978, the award honors exceptional leaders who have advanced the fields of aviation or space technology. The virtual ceremony celebrated the legendary achievements of the 2021 award recipient and record-setting Voyager pilot, Richard "Dick" Rutan. A recording of the presentation is available here. NAA extends our congratulations to Dick Rutan on this well-deserved honor.
