Maris Platais was born in Latvia and has lived in New England since 1949.  He is a graduate of Tufts University and The Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he later taught drawing for many years.  Currently, he gives private lessons.
He is a member of The Guild of Boston Artists where he has had several one-man shows.  He has won four  Awards for Excellence at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT and four  Honors Awards from The Academic Artists Association, Springfield, MA.  He is a  Signature Member of The American Society of Marine Painters(ASMA) & he is a Past President of The Concord Art Association, Concord MA.
Maris is well known for his acrylics on canvas, pen & ink drawings and limited edition etchings of New England landscapes and boats.  Many of his fine works depict Kennebec, Maine, and the magnificent trees that surround his studio near Concord, Massachusetts.  He paints on location in every season, but the blazing colors of his autumn scenes are treasures.
He has seen service in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Atlantic and the Pacific, has crewed on the Friendship of Salem, Schooner America II, and sailed his sloop Quill on the Maine coast. Recently he had a solo exhibit in his native Latvia in 2015.

Note from the President

I have exciting news to share! Our new  website will be operating in a matter of days.  There will be notification when it is up and running.  While most of the website is functioning, parts of it will still be under construction.  What will work is the Log In, and most of the links on the menu bar at the top of the home page. By logging in you will be able to create a profile, and create an artist's page with up to five images, your artist statement and contact information.  The menu bar will take you to various links within the site that will provide you with information about all of our events including exhibits with a description of each and a link to the application form.  You can now apply on line and pay exhibit fees via Pay Pal or credit card. Other areas will be membership, a calendar, the current and archived newsletters, and the about menu, which includes our contact information, members of the board, our history, volunteer opportunities and our organization guidelines. Watch for the notification email and then have fun exploring the website. You will like it.

Our next exhibit is the  "October Reflections" exhibit at the Wedeman Gallery at Lasell College .  The juror for this exhibit will be Jennifer Johnston, owner of Three Stones Gallery in West Concord. Following that will be the Bonnar Show, this year taking place at the New Art Center. There will be an opportunity to sell your work at a Holiday Sale. The juror for the Bonnar will be Katherine French, former executive director of Danforth Art and currently the gallery director at Catamount Arts in St. Johnsbury, VT.  She will be present at the reception and awards ceremony.  In January we will have a juried show at the Mother Brook Arts and Community Center in Dedham.  There will be a call to artists in mid-November. We are seeking large works of art as well as smaller works of art.  If you work large, this is your show. Applying members will submit up to three digital images to our website. Cindy Clements, Newton artist and board member of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Casey Curry, exhibits director at New Art Center will judge and curate the exhibit.  Both of these exhibits will be available online at our website.

If you need help with images to submit to the Mother Brook for to have for your artist page, we are holding two drop in
photography sessions offered by our member, Cindy Cole. She will photograph your work and provide you with digital images.  Look for information about this elsewhere in the newsletter.

And as I said last month, our association is made of entirely of volunteers. I hope that as a member you will volunteer to help in some way with the events we have this year. If you have any questions please contact me.

Watch for the website email.

Thanks.
James

CONGRATULATIONS
to our 2016 Library Show Winners!

Judge: William F. Pope, Executive Director, Zullo Gallery

Gene Faucher Award - First Prize

Marian Dioguardi, "Entaglement", oil panel - A wonderfully vibrant work that takes a very complicated subject - the layering of transparent color plastic cups and presents it as a beau tiful mix of colored lines and shadows that is bold and elegant in its simplicity.

Dr. and Mrs. Leslie Russell Award - First prize  -   Paul Alie, "Basket Series with Apples #2" , transparent watercolor - This is a very well composed painting with a great sense of depth & the monochromatic coloring of almost everything but the apples -which are rendered extremely well atop a wonderful old basket that seems to come to life through a great use of light and shadows.

M ollie and Henry Schoenberg Award - First Prize
Ruth Kates, "The Happy Campers"
Pastel - Ruth has done a
great job at capturing the unique character of the four individuals in this painting each with their own facial expression and  pos e - the individual body language of their hands and legs  and feet- as if i n a photogra ph but with much more emotion - bringing them together as a group for us to study and enjoy.

Second Prize
James C. Varnum, "Mythic Mood", watercolor and ink - A captivating, mysterious work full of intrigue and questions - seemingly on an organic level with layers of color and complex lines and shapes rising from a red raw emotional level to the peaceful blue surface and beyond -trying nobly and succeeding in a certain way to illustrate the mythical.

Third Prize
Gitty Schacher, "Ambiguity", watercolor A very clean precise work that softly dramatizes the look from the subject's eyes under the brim of a straw hat and a line of shadow. An impressive watercolor painting that works through the use of subtle color and light changes on the contours of the face that makes us wonder what the individual is thinking.

Honorable Mention
Barney Levitt, "Under the Tuscan Sun", oil This is an accomplished optimistic painting composed in a way to make it look as if it came from the old world. Strong use of color and size and shape - and captures the materials of glass and cloth to bring the bounty of fields to the forefront.

Honorable Mention
Linda Rinearson, "Reflections" watercolor - A quiet almost fragile painting that works so well through the deftly painted branches and trees mixed with saturated, beautifully blended fields of color in the water and the woods that captures the feeling of being on the river in late fall.

Honorable Mention
Adrienne Robinson, "Japanese Sun Goddess Amaterasu", collage A powerful piece with an amusing narrative from the noble to the comical - with a third person presenting a choice - or a way. Each wonderfully attired through the use of a mix of materials and hand drawn faces to create a strong dynamic and an interesting story.

Honorable Mention
Gary Tucker, "Farmers Market Copley Square", watercolor Gary has created a beautiful gem of a painting making the most of the ability of watercolor to communicate a lot of information economically. The great old faded building in the back ground allows the colorful figures in the foreground to standout and gives us the good feeling of being in the market on a bright and sunny day.

I want to make you aware that 9 of my paintings are hanging at Mass General Hospital, Yawkey Cancer Center lobby on the 8th floor. NAA Art Show Opportunities

Notice to all Newton Art Association Members
Artwork Photography Assistance

In January the NAA is having a juried show at Mother Brook Arts and Community Center in Dedham, MA.

Mother Brook is a former elementary school that has been converted into artist studios, community classrooms, a performance space and a gallery. The gallery consists of the lower and upper corridors of the building. The gallery space is large and requires large works of art. The call to artists will ask for large artwork.

In mid-October there will be the call for artists to submit up to three jpg images along with the application and exhibit fee. You will apply online and upload up to three images for the show. The images uploaded to the website will be used by our judged and curated by Cindy Clements and Casey Curry to jury in members for the Mother Brook exhibit. You may submit up to three images from Mid-October to Mid-November. There is no limit on size. Please do not submit artwork that is less than twelve inches on a side.

The NAA, in collaboration with the New Art Center will be offering Saturday afternoon appointments to get paintings photographed by our generous member, Cindy Cole. Cindy will photograph up to three of your paintings for $25.00 per image. She will then process and adjust coloring and resolution and send them to you via Drop Box. You should receive your images within one week. Photography will take place in the Elvas Studio at NAC.

Your pieces, if canvas, will be hung by the cross bar behind the canvas on nails so that they are vertical. Works on paper should be presented without a frame, glass or acrylic over the painting. Provide a pre-cut neutral mat that can go around the paper to keep it flat. The mat will be mounted to a vertical wall with pushpins at the outer most corners. Mats should be temporarily attached to artwork with archival tape.

Dates available are: Saturday, October 8, and15, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Please sign up for the Saturday and time slot that works for you (see below). Payment can be made in cash, or by check. If interested, please email James Varnum at jcvarnum@icloud.com. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

 Thank you
James Varnum and Cindy Cole

Email me the time that you would like to come to the Elvas Studio at the New Art Center to get one to three pieces of artwork photographed. My email: jcvarnum@icloud.com
