  • In 2022, Ramadan, the Islamic holy month, runs from April 1 to April 30. Ramadan is a festive time in Islam, meant for togetherness and community. For Muslim students, however, it can sometimes feel lonely or isolating. Fortunately, there are a few things teachers can do to support students during Ramadan.
  • Avoid food centric class events as students celebrating Ramadan must fast between sunrise and sunset.
  • Reduce potentially dangerous physical exercion as students who are fasting may be prone to exhaustian.
  • Consider decorating your classroom for Ramadan with the support of Muslim friends or community members.
  • Visit the We Are Teachers site for more Ramadan inclusive actions.

  • This year, the Lenten season takes place from March 2 to April 17. Lent is a Christian celebration that starts on Ash Wednesday and culminates on Easter Sunday. The 40 day period is a time for Christians to reflect, fast, and give penance in preparation for Easter Sunday. There are a few things teachers can do to support students during the Lenten season.
  • Offer meatless options on Fridays during lent for those who abstain from meat during this time.
  • Know that some students may be absent from school on Ash Wednesday (March 2) and Good Friday (April 15) to attend church services.
  • Recognize that some students often give up or take on certain things during lent as a way to honor their faith and the season.
  • Visit this BBC online article about Lent to learn more.
