New Market Report on Energy Storage for Data Centers

NAATBatt has published a new comprehensive report on the energy storage market for data centers. Available exclusively to NAATBatt members through the NAATBatt Resources page, the report provides insights into one of the fastest-growing sectors of the battery industry. NAATBatt plans to release 3-4 Market Reports annually covering key sectors of the advanced battery market. Access to these reports is included with NAATBatt membership, offering significant value compared to the cost of purchasing similar research from major consulting firms. NAATBatt Lithium-Ion Battery Supply Chain Database

Since 2021, NAATBatt has retained the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) (formerly the National Renewable Energy Laboratory), to produce a comprehensive database of all companies in North America active in the lithium-ion battery supply chain. The database can be accessed by clicking here: NLR/NAATBatt Lithium-Ion Battery Supply Chain.

NAATBatt membership dues pay for the database. As a public service, NAATBatt makes the database available to all users. The database is a public resource intended to make doing business in the North American lithium-ion supply chain easier and more efficient. Thanks to all NAATBatt members for doing their part to make this available to everyone!

Under its contract with NAATBatt, NLR, with the assistance of Avicenne Energy, updates the database every six months. Updates identify new companies active in the lithium-ion market and reflect changes in the industry. NLR released the latest update on April 1, 2026.

The updated database now identifies more than 1,000 companies and more than 1,200 facilities involved in manufacturing, supplying, designing or supporting lithium-ion battery technology in North America. It includes companies involved in mining, material processing, electrode/cell/pack manufacturing, cell component production, recycling/repurposing, and supporting infrastructure such as equipment makers, R&D startups, services, consulting, product distributors, and professional services.

Cybersecurity Community Examines CHARGE Act and Emerging 45X Loopholes

NAATBatt’s Cybersecurity Community recently tackled a series of timely policy and security concerns surrounding the CHARGE Act and evolving Section 45X tax credit regulations, highlighting the growing intersection between domestic manufacturing policy and battery cybersecurity.

During the discussion, Community Co-chair Michael Worry shared five key recommendations that were submitted to Congressman Greg Steube’s office regarding the CHARGE Act legislation. Feedback focused on potential supply chain workarounds, white labeling practices, the need for a clearer definition of energy storage systems, and the importance of including whistleblower protections within the legislation.

The conversation then shifted to Section 45X advanced manufacturing tax credits and the significant implications of new restrictions introduced through the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act.” Worry explained that eligibility for 45X credits may now be limited when systems rely too heavily on equipment connected to foreign influenced entities, including specifically named Chinese battery manufacturers.

Particular attention was given to the Material Assistance Cost Ratio (MAC) equation and how reliance on certain imported lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells could jeopardize qualification for domestic manufacturing incentives. The group also explored a hypothetical cybersecurity loophole involving foreign entities providing critical software or intellectual property at no cost, potentially bypassing domestic content calculations while still introducing security risks.

Juan Villarreal provided additional insight into NERC CIP-13 cybersecurity requirements, emphasizing that regulators review all software components regardless of cost. The Community agreed that additional discussions will be important as these regulations continue to evolve.

Early Access Opportunity: Battery Carbon Footprint Calculator for U.S. Battery Makers

Battery carbon footprint (CF) regulations are advancing rapidly, including the EU Battery Regulation requirement for CF declarations beginning in February 2027. To help manufacturers prepare, Argonne National Laboratory has developed a free battery CF calculator for evaluating and reporting product carbon footprints.

We are inviting a small group of U.S. battery manufacturers to test the tool and provide feedback.

ZOE Energy Storage (China-based) has signed a JV agreement with a Saudi partner to establish a battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing facility in the Kingdom. The facility will be built in two phases. Phase I targets 6GWh (gigawatt-hour) of annual production capacity, with manufacturing set to begin in 1Q27. Phase II expands to 18GWh.
