April 3, 2017 – NABT is pleased to announce its formal endorsement of the March for Science occurring on Aril 22, 2017 in Washington, DC, with satellite marches occurring on the same day in locales around the country and world. Over 400 marches and public events are planned to coincide with the March for Science.

Taking place on Earth Day, the March for Science “champions robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity.” This nonpartisan effort calls for all science enthusiasts to unite in support for science that upholds the common good. The mission of the March for Science has resonated with individuals and organizations alike, and led to the NABT Board of Directors unanimously supporting NABT’s participation in the March.

“For many of us, science is our first love and an integral part of our life. We love what we do. We love our disciplines. We love teaching students about our discipline,” said Dr. Susan Finazzo, president of NABT. “The March for Science represents a chance to speak up for science, to share our passion and our commitment to science, and to let others know why we do what we do. Science is important, not just to us, but to everyone.“

As an organization dedicated to empowering educators to providing the best possible biology and life science education to all students, the leaders of NABT found close alignment between our goals and the core principles of the March:
  • Science that serves the common good
  • Evidence-based policy and regulations in the public interest
  • Cutting-edge science education
  • Diversity and inclusion in STEM
  • Open, honest science and inclusive public outreach
  • Funding for scientific research and its applications

NABT supports the value, integrity, vitality and autonomy of the scientific community. We therefore lend our support to the March for Science and encourage our community to take part – and contribute to – this nonpartisan effort to highlight science, science education, and to communicate the value and importance of science to society.
