Program Agenda for NABT2022 Now Online
With over 100 sessions scheduled, you might already have trouble deciding what to go to. But wait, there's more! More sessions, more speaker details, and more special events like the HHMI Night at the Movies will be added in the coming weeks so check back at 2022 Program Agenda to get updates on everything Indy-related.
|
|
Tickets for special workshops and the Saturday night event at the NCAA Hall of Champions will be available at the end of August. Space is limited for these events, and a valid registration must be on file to add tickets for special workshops, meal functions, field trips, and special events.
Registering for the NABT Conference is quick and easy. You can register online or by downloading the 2022 Registration Form. NABT is also still offering discounts to groups of three or more who register at the same time. Contact NABT at conference@nabt.org or chat with us at NABT.org.

Reminder: All sessions, functions, and exhibits will take place at the JW Marriott Indianapolis unless otherwise noted. NABT has a special room rate of $215/night plus tax at the hotel and reservations can be made at JW Marriott Indianapolis.
The deadline for this special room rate is October 17th and hotel reservations must be canceled 48 hours in advance for refunds.

NABT2022 First-Timer Fellowships Still Available
"Science teaching can sometimes become a lonely enterprise. We can get stuck in our classroom silos," shared the member donor. "How wonderful it is to connect with our community, to dialogue with our colleagues, to share our successes and solve our common problems. That's what an NABT conference does."
|
|
-
Open to K-12 teachers who want to attend the NABT Conference for the first time, the fellowship includes registration and a one-year membership to NABT.
- Application materials include a current CV and a short essay describing how you expect the experience to enrich your current teaching practice, with a brief explanation of how this support will make your participation possible.
- A letter of support from a school administrator is also required (sample language provided).
First-Timer Fellowships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and complete application instructions are available at Indy FT Fellows.

NABT Members Sharon Gusky and
Dr. Jacqueline McLaughin Honored
NABT congratulates Sharon Gusky and Jacqueline McLaughlin, who were recently recognized for their contributions to STEM Education.
|
|
Sharon Gusky, a biology professor at Northwestern Connecticut Community College and NABT Past-President, has been placed on the Fulbright Specialist Roster. The Fulbright Specialist Program is part of the larger Fulbright Program and allows U.S. academics and specialists the opportunity to engage in multi-week, project-based exchanges with over 150 host institutions worldwide.
Selected by a peer review panel to join the Fulbright Specialist Roster, Sharon will serve as a specialist for four years. During that time, she will be paired with institutions to share "expertise, strengthen institutional linkages, hone [her] skills, gain international experience, and learn about other cultures while building capacity at [her] overseas host institutions.
|
|
“I am very excited to share my knowledge and experience in student-centered learning and undergraduate biology education with science departments abroad,” Sharon said in a statement. “And I look forward to learning new and exciting things from the institutions that I visit.”
|
|
The NSEE award honors McLaughlin's contributions to “the development of the philosophy and practice of experiential education and to the advancement of that field." Award winners are recognized for their "professional integrity, humanitarian regard, ethical concern, standards of excellence, informed knowledge, leadership, service, dedication, and recognized scholarship/practice," according to NSEE.
“I have devoted my life’s work to higher education and striving to create traditional classrooms and non-traditional field-based experiences that expound the philosophy of experimental education,” said Jackie in a statement. “When students are engaged in real-world, hands-on experiences that allow them to pose questions, investigate, experiment, solve problems, take responsibility, be creative and contribute to society, I believe they define the well-rounded student that our institution endeavors to graduate. These students have the knowledge, skills, values and capacity to fulfill their potential and better our world.”
Jackie will receive the John S. Duley Lifetime Achievement Award in September at NSEE’s annual conference in Salt Lake City.

Meet HudsonAlpha's FILTERED at NABT2022
|
|
HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology inspires and prepares society to utilize genomics for health and global sustainability by developing educational programs, materials, and experiences. The latest online game, FILTERED, introduces the concepts and tools of bioinformatics to students who attempt to unlock the identity of a mysterious pathogen crisscrossing the globe. The activity's dramatic, graphic novel style helps students grasp the function of programs used to analyze DNA.
A special workshop will also be offered on Thursday, November 10th from 11:30am - 3:30pm. Learn more at 2022 Special Workshops and tickets will become available in the next few weeks.

Become An ABT Cover Photographer
Every month, The American Biology Teacher (ABT) features a cover photo taken by an NABT community member. Whether you’re a trained photographer or just a happy snapper, we encourage you to submit wildlife, classroom, and laboratory photos for consideration. Student submissions are highly encouraged.
Photos should have a vertical orientation and must meet the minimum resolution of 300 pixels per inch (PPI) (although 400+ PPI is preferred) at a print size of 8.5 x 11.25 (or 3400px x 4400px).
If you are interested in sharing your photos or have any questions, please contact Kathleen Westrich, ABT Senior Reviewing and Cover Editor, at kmwestrich@yahoo.com. Your email should include a brief description of the image, details of the shot (i.e. time of day, location, type of camera, camera settings, etc.), and your full contact information.
