NABT Recognizes 2021 Awardees
For over 80 years, the National Association of Biology Teachers has recognized the professional achievements of thousands of teachers, students, and scientists through its award program. Notable awards include the NABT Honorary Membership, Distinguished Service Award, and the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (OBTA). NABT also supports a diverse suite of awards that honor exemplary teaching of life science content and innovation at the undergraduate level.
On November 13th, NABT held a special ceremony during the 2021 Professional Development Conference in Atlanta to celebrate the accomplishments of the following educators. The NABT Awards program recognizes teachers for their expertise in specific subject areas, for contributions to the profession made by new teachers, and service to NABT, life science teaching, or leadership in learning communities. Each state, province, and territory can also recognize an Outstanding Biology Teacher (OBTA).

Nominate a K-6 Teacher for the PAEMST Today
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), the nation’s highest honors for STEM teachers, 2021–2022 nomination and application cycle for K-6th grade teachers is still open. PAEMST are awarded annually to exceptional K–12 educators throughout the nation, alternating each year between K-6th and 7-12th grades. Many NABT members have received the PAEMST and you can learn about recent awardees here.
Do you have an outstanding K-6 STEM teacher in your life?
Being recognized as a PAEMST awardee is a tremendous honor. Recipients gather in Washington, D.C., to be recognized for their accomplishments; receive a certificate signed by the President; as well as a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF); and join a cadre of over 5,100 award-winning teachers.

SimBio Releases New Tutorials and Resources
With SimBio’s latest series of simulation-rich tutorials, students learn via experimentation, tinkering with the machinery cells employ to maintain and use genetic information to build proteins. Students use simulated enzymes to replicate DNA and express genes. Use codon tables to build proteins. Use simulated repressors/activators to construct the lac operon. Importantly, they see for themselves what happens when they make mistakes.
Carefully scaffolded interactives provide formative feedback as students answer questions. Auto-graded quizzes provide accountability. Whether used to supplement/replace textbook assignments or as labs, by actively engaging your students with concepts rather than just facts, they will learn both at a much deeper level.

ASHG Releases 2022 DNA DAY Essay Question
|
|
ASHG is proud to support National DNA Day through the Annual DNA Day Essay Contest. DNA Day commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003 and the discovery of the double helix of DNA in 1953.
This contest is open to students in grades 9-12 worldwide and asks students to examine, question, and reflect on important concepts in genetics. Essays are expected to be well-reasoned arguments that indicate a deep understanding of scientific concepts related to the essay question. They are evaluated by ASHG members through three rounds of scoring.
The 2022 Question
The “Father of Genetics,” Gregor Mendel, was born 200 years ago in northern Moravia (now Czechia). His experiments with pea plants led to observations and conclusions that became fundamental principles of genetic inheritance. These principles include: 1) Each organism has two versions (or alleles) of each gene; 2) One allele is inherited from the mother, and one allele is inherited from the father; 3) Alleles can be dominant or recessive; 4) Genes for different traits are inherited independently from each other. Because of Mendel’s contributions, traits and disorders that are caused by variation in one gene (For Example, Huntington’s disease, Cystic fibrosis) are called Mendelian traits or disorders. There are also complex traits and disorders (For Example, diabetes, hypertension) that are caused by variation in many genes and, often, environmental factors.

Project Dragonfly Accepting Applications For
2022 Programs
Miami University’s Project Dragonfly is currently accepting applications for the 2022 Earth Expeditions graduate courses, offering extraordinary experiences in 15 countries throughout the world. Earth Expeditions graduate courses are open to people from all disciplines and settings who hold a bachelor’s degree.
Earth Expeditions can build toward the Global Field Program (GFP), a master's degree that combines summer field courses worldwide with web learning communities so that students can complete the GFP master's part-time from anywhere in the United States or abroad.
Project Dragonfly also offers the Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) master's degree that combines web instruction from Miami University with experiential learning and field study through several AIP Master Institutions in the U.S. Applications for Miami's 2022 cohorts are being accepted now with place-based experiences provided at zoos and botanical gardens in Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Jacksonville, New York, San Diego, Seattle, and St. Louis.
Graduate tuition for all programs is greatly reduced because of support from Miami University.
