NABT Releases Statement Regarding School-Based
Gun Violence
On December 13, 2022, the NABT Board of Directors voted unanimously to publically support any legislative measures that help make our schools and classrooms safer.
In addition, the Board unequivocally condemned the continued rise of school-based gun violence, noting that "effective teaching and learning cannot occur if students and their teachers do not feel safe in their classrooms." While acknowledging that gun violence "is a public health issue that is only beginning to be properly researched by institutions like the CDC and NIH," NABT leaders promised to "continue to advocate for our members in support of policy decisions informed by data and best practices that create and maintain safe teaching and learning spaces."

Submit Your Session Proposal for NABT2023 in Baltimore
Do you have a no-fail resource that gets your students engaged? Have you got a "tip tool kit" that you want to share? Are you interested in facilitating a Chat about that hot topic you keep seeing in your PLCs?
Session proposals are being accepted online until Saturday, April 1st using the new 2023 NABT Proposal Portal. To help make submitting a proposal quick and easy, NABT has prepared submission guidelines to help you get the required materials prepared.
Submitting a proposal is easy and Submission Guidelines are available to ensure you have the required materials prepared before you submit online at 2023 NABT Session Submissions. PLEASE NOTE: Sessions that promote a saleable product, program, or service must be conducted as an exhibitor workshop. In order to submit an exhibitor workshop, the organization must be exhibiting at the conference.
After April 1st, the NABT Professional Development Committee will review submissions, and acceptance notifications will be emailed to primary presenters by May 15, 2023. Upon acceptance, all session presenters must register before May 31st for your session to be included in the 2023 Conference Program. Please contact all co-presenters before you submit to make them aware of this requirement.
The 2023 NABT Professional Development Conference will be held Thursday, November 2 through Sunday, November 5th, and we could not be MORE excited to finally get to Baltimore!! Visit 2023 NABT Conference for the latest updates.

Nominate a Biology Teacher for an NABT Award
NABT awards recognize teachers for their expertise in specific subject areas, for contributions to the profession made by new teachers, and to recognize service to NABT, life science education, or leadership in learning communities.
This year, NABT is proud to feature a new award, The Excellence in Encouraging JEDI Award. The recipient/recipients of this award will demonstrate a passion and commitment for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) through their teaching and outreach, while also identifying successful strategies that increase enthusiasm for biology in their students. This award is open to individuals teaching at all levels, groups of teachers, and departments.
Learn more about the NABT Awards Program, then nominate yourself or a colleague for an award by filling out the online nomination form. Most nominations are due by March 15th, but there are some notable exceptions.

Help us identify the amazing biology teachers in your state by nominating them for the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (OBTA). The OBTA was established over 50 years ago to recognize 7-12 teaching and is one of science education's most prestigious awards.
The nomination deadline for the OBTA is Wednesday, February 15th, and you can nominate your colleagues (and yourself) at NABT Award Nomination Form.

Cindy Gay Receives
Boettcher Award
Congratulations to Cindy Gay, who was recently named a 2022 recipient of the Boettcher Foundation's Alumni Recognition Award. This awards program aims to celebrate Boettcher Scholar Alumni who embody the Foundation's ethos of service, leadership, and giving back to others.
The Boettcher Foundation was established in Colorado in 1937 to give back to the state where Charles Boettcher, and later his son Claude Boettcher, built their family fortune. The Boettcher family "valued hard work, championed excellence, and sought ways to support the people and communities around them." Today, the Boettcher Foundation continues the family's legacy to propel Colorado forward.
Cindy received her first Boettcher award in 1978 with the Boettcher Scholarship. She was a student at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and earned her BS in Biology & Environmental Conservation. She then received her MA in Biology from the same university.
Cindy's impressive career in science education spans over 40 years and includes classroom teaching at all levels and achieving National Board Certification. She has served as a consultant for HHMI, the Center for Biomolecular Modeling, Bio-Rad Laboratories, Genetics Science Learning Center, and the College Board. She has also held leadership positions in a number of organizations, including serving as the President of the Colorado Biology Teachers Association (CBTA). She is currently a Director-at-Large at NABT.
In 2016, Cindy joined BSCS as a Science Educator, where she designs and leads professional learning experiences that support thousands of teachers. She has also contributed to the development of several instructional materials programs, including the brand new high school biology course, BSCS Biology: Understanding for Life.
Cindy frequently talks about wanting to "leave a bigger footprint in science education," and we hope that she realizes how grateful we are to follow the path(s) she blazes. You will never meet anyone more passionate about teaching biology, inspiring students, or supporting her colleagues than Cindy, and we congratulate her on this much-deserved recognition for her achievements.

We'll meet on Zoom on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm ET (6:00 pm CT, 5:00 pm MT, 4:00 pm PT). The discussion will kick off with this question:

Proposals Still Accepted for
2023 Life Discovery Conference
The LDC will be held in Tallahassee, Florida March 23-25, 2023, and this year's theme is "Variants in Biology Education: What we can learn from Pandemics?" The pandemic has required all of us to reconsider how we teach, learn, and approach mainstream organismal biology education. This is your opportunity to connect with colleagues to grapple with teaching concepts of change, resistance, immunity, adaptation, and workforce preparation needs in a world where pandemics are now ubiquitous among all living organisms.
Proposals are also still being accepted for the Education Share Fair. This session is designed for educators to create or revise lesson plans or activities. Proposals can be submitted for ideas and lessons at any stage of development. Each lesson or idea will be presented by the author. Presenters spend about 15 minutes describing their lesson idea. You then receive immediate feedback and suggestions from your peers in a friendly, constructive environment. Learn more and submit your proposal at 2023 LDC Share Fair.

Apply Today for 2023 Fulbright Programs for
K-12 Educators
Fulbright Teacher Exchange participants equip their students with skills to successfully engage with the world by bringing an international perspective to U.S. schools. Each year nearly 120 K-12 educators from across the United States participate in programs abroad from two weeks to six months. Accepted educators have a wide range of teaching experience in public, private, or charter schools. Successful applicants come from all backgrounds, and their applications demonstrate how the exchange experience will influence their teaching and their students going forward.

The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research Program provides an opportunity for educators from the United States to take part in a three- to six-month professional learning experience abroad to conduct research and pursue additional learning. Participants conduct individual research projects, take courses at a host university, and collaborate with colleagues on educational practices to improve student learning.
