Donor Supports First-Time Attendees at NABT2022
"Science teaching can sometimes become a lonely enterprise. We can get stuck in our classroom silos," shared the member donor. "How wonderful it is to connect with our community, to dialogue with our colleagues, to share our successes and solve our common problems. That's what an NABT conference does."

First-Timer Fellows
Open to K-12 teachers who want to attend the NABT Conference for the first time, the fellowship includes registration and a one-year membership to NABT.
Application materials include a current CV and a short essay describing how you expect the experience to enrich your current teaching practice, with a brief explanation of how this support will make your participation possible. A letter of support from a school administrator is also required (sample language provided).
Ten (10) First-Timer Fellowships are available and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Complete application instructions are available at Indy FT Fellows.

Mini-Grants
The grants will cover conference registration and up to $500 reimbursement support to attend the NABT Conference for the first time. Three (3) mini-grants are available to educators at all levels (K-16) and can be used to cover subs/TAs, childcare, travel costs, or other related expenses.
Required application materials include a current CV, an essay describing how attending the NABT Conference will support your professional goals, and a description of how meeting your specific need is necessary to participate in the conference.

Deadline Extension: 2022 Research Papers |
Research papers are still being accepted for the 14th Annual Biology Education Research Symposium. Papers go through a double-blind review process, and accepted papers will be featured during the symposium on November 11th at the NABT Conference. Proceedings will also be published online. The updated deadline for submission is Wednesday, July 13th.

BioClubs Celebrate Student Awardees
During the 2021 academic year, NABT BioClubs could finally resume their regularly scheduled programming. Many restarted service projects like shore and roadside clean-ups. Others continued to expand their virtual offerings with featured presentations from scientists and movie/documentary watch parties. The activities were different, but the effect was the same. These students (and their advisors) had a great time learning and working together!
This year, the BioClub recognized 286 graduating seniors who wore green honor cords to designate their academic achievements in biology and life science.
We also want to congratulate the winners of the $500 BioClub Student Scholarships. With generous support from Carolina Biological Supply, NABT named both a high school and two-year college winner.

The 2022 BioClub High School Student Award went to Angie Leckron from Perkins High School in Sandusky, Ohio. Like so many graduating seniors, Angie did not want to miss out on any more school experiences. In addition to her extensive community and church service, Angie "decided to fill up [her] schedule to the brim." She participated in her high school musical and play. She served as Senior Class President and was on NHS. She also lettered in both cross country and swim. But some of her favorite extracellulars involved STEM. Angie was in both the robotics club and BioClub, where she was the Vice President.
Angie enjoys applying what she learns to everyday conversations and "sharing interesting and neat facts." This skill will serve her well as she attends Ohio State University to major in Biology on the Pre-Med track.

"I am feeling beyond blessed and grateful for this wonderful scholarship," said Angie in a written statement. "As an aspiring medical student and future practicing physician, one can say that I’m “in it for the long haul” which is undeniably true, but I am elated to see where my path takes me. I hope to make everyone proud! Thank you."
In addition to congratulating Angie on her BioClub Scholarship, we also want to congratulate her on recently earning United States Citizenship!

This year's recipient of the 2022 BioClub Two-Year College Student Award is Jessica Willmore from Snow College in Ephraim, UT. Jessica is a natural leader on campus, serving in different capacities in various clubs and organizations. She is also a talented artist, singing in the Snow College Chamber and Women's Chorales.
As BioClub President, Jessica focused on engaging students from all majors, planning numerous activities that were "intriguing and meaningful for a wide range of people." Her advisor Lindsay Chaney noted in her recommendation letter that "Jessica has done a phenomenal job planning and executing activities. Tonight, in fact, is an example of one of these activities. She coordinated with a doctor from an area health science university to talk about her experiences and about applying to their programs."

Jessica has a deep passion for educating people about science. "I am so thankful for the chance to represent students my age who also share a love--and a nerdy sense of humor--for biology," she said.
Having graduated from Snow College, Jessica will attend Utah State University to earn her bachelor's degree in Communication, emphasizing Health and Community Outreach. Ultimately, she would like to attend PA or medical school and work in underserved rural communities like where she grew up.
Congratulations again to our BioClub Awardees and the hundreds of other students participating in the NABT BioClub. A special thank you to our NABT BioClub Advisors, whose passion for biology education inspires both their students and fellow teachers.

Ungrading: From Teaching Philosophy to
Student Success

When Dr. Gabriel Guzman developed his personal teaching philosophy over 20 years ago, he decided that it would be based on something that he felt was missing when he was a student struggling to fit in, with friends, classmates, and the college experience in general. “Students learn what they care about, from people they care about and who, they know, care about them.”
Join Dr. Guzman as he discusses what have been the most impactful practices in his community college classroom: metacognition, active learning, and more recently ungrading.

NABT Highlights Student Researchers at
CESR Poster Session
NABT is pleased to announce the winners of the First Annual Course-Embedded Student Research Competition. Designed to encourage the inclusion of course-embedded research in introductory biology courses and to celebrate student research, this competition was open to student and their instructors, who presented in teams.
|
|
Third Place was awarded to Logan Wilson and Fashal Alam for their poster on the “Genomic Analysis of Sahara and Soil Assassin." They are students at Torrington High School in Connecticut and performed their research with Sandra Cangelosi, a biology teacher at the high school.
|

Spring Issue of NIGMS Pathways Available Online
Brought to you by NIGMS and Scholastic, Inc. Pathways provides a collection of free educational resources about basic biomedical science and research careers. The Pathways resources are designed for grades 6 - 12, include a student magazine, teacher lesson plans, activities, and videos. The student magazine is distributed twice a year to subscribers of Scholastic’s Science World magazine, and both the student magazine and teaching guide can be ordered free of charge.
In the Spring 2022 issue, you’ll learn about mRNA vaccines and the spike protein, as well as how researchers were equipped to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. The issue of #NIGMSPathways also includes a message from Vice President Kamala Harris on the importance of scientific collaboration, including how scientists from different fields have come together to create mRNA vaccines.
