NABT Updates Position Statement on Role of Lab & Field Experiences
The NABT Board of Directors has recently approved a revised position statement on the Role of Laboratory and Field Experiences in Life Science Education. Engaging with science practices is key to helping students understand how scientific knowledge is gained and applied. These experiences also promote positive attitudes toward science, helping to encourage interest and confidence in STEM.
The National Association of Biology Teachers "encourages educators to design hands-on learning that is inclusive, cost-effective, and creates opportunities for students." We also directs educators to "consider the needs and accommodations necessary to ensure that all students can fully and safely participate" in the experience.
NABT Position Statements are regularly updated after adoption and approved by the Board of Directors. To learn more about this process or to suggest future statements, please contact NABT.

Deadline Reminders: 2022 Research Papers & Biology Education Posters

Biology Education Research Symposium
You are invited to present your research in biology education during the 13th Annual Biology Education Research Symposium. This is a refereed session featuring presentations that were accepted through a double-blind review process. Proceedings are also published online.
All life science education researchers, from elementary to graduate levels, in formal and informal settings, are welcome to submit.
The deadline for submission is Friday, June 17th.

Biology Education Poster Session
The popular NABT Poster Session highlights practices, programs, and research in three distinct categories: general strategies for teaching biology, the scholarship of teaching, and mentored student research. Posters presented by students are eligible for two competitions, and winners will be announced onsite in Indianapolis.
The deadline for submission is Monday, August 15th.

Emails indicating session acceptance were sent to primary presenters on May 16, 2022. If you received the notification, please let your co-presenters know. Remember, all presenters must be registered for the NABT Conference by June 15th for your session to be included in the final conference program.

2022 Maurice R. Hilleman Essay Contest for Students in U.S. & Canada Closes June 10th!
This year’s writing prompt focuses on determination in science. Dr. Hilleman, one of history’s most accomplished scientists, used determination to progress toward his goal of wiping out childhood diseases.
Who? Students in grades 6-12 (Quebec grades 6-11)
What? Six winners (3 U.S. & 3 Canada) will each receive US $1,000 and be honored during a virtual celebration.
- Teachers named on winning essays will receive a book signed by Dr. Paul Offit and one-year of complimentary membership to NABT.
How? Learn about Dr. Hilleman, and then write a 500- to 600-word essay that responds to the prompt: “Maurice Hilleman was a determined scientist. Describe what this means and provide an example of determination in science.”
When? The official contest deadline is 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on June 10, 2022.

Register Today for FREE Quantitative Literacy Workshop for High School Teachers
Since 2014, the University of Delaware has hosted annual workshops for Delaware high school teachers entitled the "Discover Delaware Interdisciplinary STEAM Citizen Science Project (DISCovery)." This year, with support from the Society of Mathematical Biology, DISCovery will use a hybrid format, allowing teachers in Delaware and beyond to participate in the multiday event.
This free, multi-day workshop aims to help high school teachers better understand news coverage of the COVID epidemic, the critical role mathematical epidemiologists play in informing policy, and the availability of educational modules that can be used with students to build better informed, responsible citizens.
