Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2021 NABT Election. Your votes helped the National Association of Biology Teachers maintain its 83-year tradition of choosing members from our community to lead our community.

NABT Honors 2021 Outstanding Biology Teachers
Established in 1962, the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (OBTA) is one of the most prestigious honors NABT gives to biology teachers. Each year, the program attempts to recognize an outstanding biology educator (grades 7-12) in each of the 50 states; Washington, DC; Canada; Puerto Rico; and overseas territories.
This year, NABT was proud to name 22 OBTA Honorees. These teachers join the ranks of over 3000 teachers who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, devotion to their students, and a degree of professionalism that their professional colleagues recognize as truly "outstanding."
The 2021 OBTAs were honored during a special presentation at the recent NABT Professional Development Conference in Atlanta, and we encourage you to learn more about this year's honorees by reading their biographies.

We would also like to thank all of our attendees and volunteers for working with NABT to hold this meeting safely in Atlanta. And lastly, we would like to thank our amazing staff who planned and executed this event in an ever-changing environment.

Register Today for the
2021 NABT Inclusive Teaching Symposium
|
Focused on promoting culturally relevant pedagogy in biology and life science education, presentations address research on the impacts on student outcomes and/or describe how research-based strategies have been put into direct practice in the classroom (classrooms can include online and asynchronous modalities). Accepted presentations underwent a double-blind peer-review process open to biology educators and researchers at all levels.
The NABT Inclusive Teaching Symposium will be held online, is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. Registration is available now at NABT 2021 Inclusive Teaching.

BSCS Science Learning Offers
Humane Genetics Education Institutes
BSCS Science Learning will be offering six professional development institutes on Humane Genetics Education for high school biology teachers in the summer of 2023. These institutes will provide instructors with the instructional frameworks and curriculum needed to teach about race and human population genetics in order to reduce racially biased beliefs in students.
- Each institute will take place over two weeks
- Each institute will include approximately 40 contact hours across those two weeks
- There are 25 seats available for each institute (150 seats across all six institutes)
- The institutes will occur online via the gather.town platform
- Participating teachers will receive a $500 stipend and a certificate of completion from BSCS Science Learning
These professional development institutes are part of a NSF-funded study. If you are interested in participating in a Humane Genetics Institute in the summer of 2023 and the accompanying NSF study, please visit this webpage and fill out the form that appears when you click “Notify Me” in the Sign-Up box to the right.

In this recorded webinar, Dr. Brian Donovan details why the work of the Humane Genetics program is important in this day and age to combat white supremacy.

This open-access paper published in Human Genetics and Genomics Advances defines what humane genomics literacy is, and how this form of genomics literacy relates to basic and standard forms of genomics literacy.

This open-access paper published in Science Education provides evidence for how a Humane Genetics education can reduce belief in genetic essentialism and racial bias.

Finally, the Humane Genetics Program has developed an online intervention on population genetics. This online intervention can be found here, and teachers are welcome to have their students go through the intervention. Responses are not being recorded, and students and teachers can go through the intervention as many times as they like. This intervention is the one that was studied in the paper in the previous bullet point.
In the Spring of 2022, BSCS will begin contacting teachers who have filled out the interest form to confirm their participation in the Humane Genetics summer institutes.

Apply Now for the Darwin Day Roadshow in February 2022
What is the Darwin Day Roadshow?
To celebrate Charles Darwin's birthday (February 12th), scientists hit the road to bring evolutionary science to schools and communities. For 2022, we are offering in-person visits in North Carolina* and virtual visits anywhere in the United States.
Our teams talk to students, teachers, and the general public about their research, career opportunities in science, and why evolutionary science is relevant to everyone. These visits are completely FREE, and we even leave behind a collection of resources to enhance the teaching of evolution in the classroom.
What is a typical Roadshow visit like?
We work with host teachers (i.e. you!) to design an event that best serves their school and community. There is no "typical" visit; both the topic and format are flexible to meet specific needs.
How do I apply?
You can learn more about the Roadshow at https://darwindayroadshow.wordpress.com. When you're ready, apply here by the deadline of midnight (EST) on Monday, November 29th, 2021. Since we work with host teachers to plan successful events, we are looking for enthusiastic applicants who will show creativity and initiative in working with us to coordinate the visit.
*Note: We'll be following all relevant COVID-19 guidelines and may be required to switch to virtual visits depending on the pandemic's status in February.
