Patsye Peebles Named NABT 2021 Honorary Member
When this year's NABT Honorary Member was asked to provide a statement about her teaching philosophy, Patsye Peebles replied, "I have to use this space to talk about what NABT has meant to me. I was so incredibly excited at my very first annual conference because every single time slot had multiple sessions that I wanted to see. It was such an incredible resource, and that is when I was hooked! I went home with my batteries charged and so many ideas for my classroom. Year after year, I learned so much, met so many amazing people, heard such fascinating speakers, and made friends for a lifetime."
Talking about NABT is something Patsye genuinely loves to do! For many members, Patsye's unmistakable (sweet tea) accent was one of the first to welcome them to an NABT Conference. She spent years reading the names of the winners of the Outstanding Biology Teachers Award (OBTA) and then proceeded to congratulate every one of them personally. "I couldn't help but join in to help where I could and to spread the word about NABT. I wanted every biology teacher to have the incredible experiences that I had," she said.
During her 35+ years of NABT membership, Patsye has served as a Region VI Coordinator multiple times, was both a Director-Coordinator and a Director-at-Large on the NABT Board of Directors, was the Louisiana OBTA Director and State Representatives, and has been on almost all NABT committees. And in 2009, Patyse single-handedly created the position of the National OBTA Coordinator to help ensure the success and sustainability of the program during a time of organizational transition at NABT.
For all of this and more, NABT is proud to name Patsye Peebles as the 2021 NABT Honorary Member, the highest recognition our association bestows.
Patsye was an award-winning middle and high school life science teacher before eventually teaching science education classes at Louisiana State University. She also has mentored teachers in her state's alternative certification program. Patsye was an Access Excellence fellow and has received the Tandy Technology Award, the Louisiana OBTA Award, and the Louisiana Science Teachers Association Distinguished Service Science Education Award.
In addition to her classroom teaching, Patsye is also a champion for evolution education. She was the co-founder of the Louisiana Coalition for Science, has testified before the Louisiana legislature and the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, and has been a featured guest by news organizations like NPR.
Although "retired," Patsye still helps produce and review life science curriculum and mentors teachers. And she is still talking about NABT.
NABT will officially recognize Patsye Peebles at the 2021 Honors Luncheon during the Professional Development Conference, where Patyse will be happily welcoming first-timers and congratulating OBTA Awardees.
"NABT is really my heart and I hope to continue to spread the word to biology teachers everywhere."

ICYMI: New NABT Member Portal
NABT launched its new member portal a few weeks ago, and we hope this new platform will make it easier to renew your membership, access member resources, and register for events.
The move to the new system required that all passwords were reset. If you haven't already done so, please take a moment to update your information at NABT Login. NABT members were sent personalized login instructions via email, but you can also use the Password Reset link to create new credentials.

NABT Conference Now Available
We are excited to safely present a great program and feature some fantastic speakers in Atlanta. We also know one of the most important reasons to come to an in-person event is to interact and learn from others.
This year, your conference registration also includes lunch on Friday and Saturday so you can take a break to visit the exhibit hall, network with your colleagues at Level Lunches (previously Section Luncheons), or find a quiet space to take a break.

Are you interested in learning about biology education or undergraduate research? Are you looking for a way to get more involved in NABT? If so, please consider serving as a judge for the Student Poster Competition at the 2021 Professional Development Conference in Atlanta, GA.
NABT accepted 32 posters from students this year, and information about the poster competition and rubrics can be found at NABT Call for Posters. Please contact Troy Nash (nash_tr@mercer.edu) to volunteer for judging or more information.

Biotility Launches Short Courses for Educators
Biotility at the University of Florida has launched four new professional development short-courses for educators (secondary and postsecondary) designed to integrate critical workplace competencies and skills into bioscience curricula. Each course includes instructional pedagogy and activities to anchor knowledge with workplace applications. The primary aims are to expand career awareness in the drug development and manufacturing pathway, increase confidence in the drug development and approval process, and integrate workplace competencies and skills into coursework, thereby increasing the talent pool required to support rapid response and ongoing discovery, testing, and manufacture of therapeutics.

NABT Members in the News: NCSE "Friend Of" Awards
The National Center for Science Education (NCSE) recently announced the winners of their Friend of Darwin award for 2021, and NABT would like to congratulate Dr. Jason R. Wiles for being named a recipient. Jason has long advocated for evolution education in his home state of Arkansas and is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at Syracuse University. His education research focuses on how students and the general public consider concepts related to evolution and climate change and how factors like identity and ideology impact attitudes. This research has also garnered Jason the 2021 Four-Year College & University Section Research in Biology Education Award and he will be presenting his work at the Biology Education Research Symposium during the NABT Conference in Atlanta.

Other Friend of Darwin winners include Mohamed Noor, and NABT friend and partner Briana Pobiner (pictured left). Briana is a paleoanthropologist who leads the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Human Origins Program’s public and educational programs.

X-STEM All Access Now Available On-Demand
X-STEM All Access is an entertaining, educational, and interactive online STEM experience for 6th-12th graders. Presented as a series of daily events, students will hear from an exclusive group of visionaries who aim to inspire kids about careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
