REMINDER: NABT Ballots are
Due October 1st
The 2022 NABT election cycle ends on Saturday, October 1st, and ballots must be received by that day in order to be counted.
All NABT members in good standing received their ballot via email, and please contact NABT at membership@nabt.org or use the chat at NABT.org if you did not receive the email or the reminder.

Dr. Michael Osterholm Receives
2022 Distinguished Service Award from NABT
“I am so proud of NABT and the Board of Directors for selecting Michael Osterholm for the Distinguished Service Award for 2022. As one who studied and taught microbiology for several years, I am excited to see we are honoring a biologist who has had such a worldwide impact on the field of epidemiology and infectious diseases,” said Chris Monsour, president of NABT. “His work on public health issues and epidemiology has saved countless lives and I cannot think of a better recipient of this award.”
The NABT Distinguished Service Award was established in 1988, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the association. This award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to biology education through their research, writing, and teaching. Notable recipients include Lynn Margulis, Nancy Wexler, Francis Collins, E.O. Wilson, Sean B. Carroll, Rita Colwell, Temple Grandin, and Bonnie Bassler.
“I’m so honored! I owe so much of my career to a biology teacher who took me under their wing and gave me the tools and inspiration to become an infectious disease epidemiologist! Honestly, my biology teacher deserves this award every bit if not more than me!” wrote Jeff regarding his award,” said Dr. Osterholm in a statement. “I’m truly humbled.”
Dr. Michael Osterholm is Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, a professor in the Technological Leadership Institute, College of Science and Engineering, and an adjunct professor in the Medical School, all at the University of Minnesota. He is also a proud alumnus of the University of Minnesota, earning his MS, MPH, and PhD there.
For the past 45 years, Dr. Osterholm has been building and leading world-class infectious disease epidemiology teams who are at the forefront of issues on food safety and zoonotic diseases. He has led numerous investigations of outbreaks of international importance, including foodborne diseases, the association of tampons and toxic shock syndrome, and hepatitis B and HIV in healthcare settings.
As one of the world’s foremost experts on infectious diseases, Dr. Osterholm became one of the most trusted and popular communicators on the COVID-19 pandemic. In November 2020, Dr. Osterholm was appointed to then President-elect Joe Biden's Transition COVID-19 Advisory Board and continues to be a source of fact-based information, including via CIDRAP's weekly "Osterholm Update: COVID-19" podcast.
The author of more than 315 papers and abstracts, including 21 book chapters, Dr. Osterholm is a frequent consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of Defense, and the CDC. He is also the author of the New York Times best-selling 2017 book, Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs, in which he not only details the most pressing infectious disease threats of our day but lays out a nine-point strategy on how to address them, with preventing a global flu pandemic at the top of the list.
Dr. Osterholm has received numerous honors for his work, and he is a fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
NABT is proud to name Dr. Michael Osterholm as the recipient of the 2022 NABT Distinguished Service Award. He will be presented with the award at the 2022 NABT Professional Development Conference in Indianapolis. After the award presentation, Dr. Osterholn will be the closing general session speaker on Saturday, November 12th at 4:00 PM Eastern.

Announcing the Passing of Dr. Ivo Lindauer
NABT is sad to report that Dr. Ivo Eugene Lindauer has passed away. Ivo died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on the evening of September 14, 2022. He was 91 years old.
As noted in his obituary, Ivo "left behind a spirit of adventure, education, and perseverance throughout his lifetime as a professor, botanist, historian, rancher, traveler, and a loved father, grandfather, and friend."
You could not get more "Colorado" than Ivo, and he was a well-known figure in the Colorado biology and science education communities. He was born on his family's ranch on the "western slope" in 1931 and graduated from Grand Valley High School in Parachute, Colorado in 1949. He then received his BS in General Science from Colorado State University, earned his MA in Biological Sciences from the University of Northern Colorado, and completed his PhD in Botany (Plant Ecology) from Colorado State University in 1970.
After his postdoc, Ivo briefly served in the Marine Corps. But after his service ended, Ivo quickly returned to Colorado where he married his wife BJ, had two daughters and began his career as a professor of biology. It was during his 33 years at the University of Northern Colorado that Ivo founded the Colorado Biology Teachers Association (CBTA) and became more involved in NABT.
During his time at NABT, Ivo helped form the Four-Year College & University Section, served as NABT President in 1993, and received the NABT Honorary Membership in 1998.
Ivo continued to be active in NABT and many other organizations well into his retirement and was a volunteer at the 2016 NABT Conference (we were in Denver after all). As his family noted, "Ivo was well-loved by countless others around the globe. He held a steadfast commitment to his family, the environment, his community, and creating a better world for future generations."

PlantingScience Research Study for High School Teachers
High school science teachers are invited to take part in a new research study. The goal of the study is to investigate how in-depth teacher professional learning in combination with a high-quality curriculum module and online mentoring by plant scientists can improve student outcomes and understanding of photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
This research study is based on the award-winning PlantingScience Power of Sunlight module. This study also builds on a successful previous study that resulted in significant improvements in student outcomes.

Join us in Indianapolis for a sneak peek of WILD HOPE, a new series of short films from HHMI Tangled Bank Studios highlighting the intrepid changemakers who are working to restore and protect our planet. Each half-hour episode inspires audiences with stories of bold interventions, unexpected alliances, and nature’s resilience. Whether tapping oysters to clean New York City waters and prevent flooding, or growing coffee to save Mozambican rainforests, the series reveals how local action can spark powerful change—and provides a refreshing dose of hope in an increasingly cynical world.
Following the screening, join HHMI Vice President of Science Education and Head of Tangled Bank Studios, Sean B. Carroll, and scientists from the films for a lively discussion about the importance of showcasing successes, and the power of positive storytelling to change the narrative, create a sense of community, and inspire hope.
