Unicameral Youth Legislature
June 10-13, 2018

Help our youth learn what it's like to serve as a state senator. The Unicameral Youth Legislature is a four-day legislative simulation in which high school students take on the role of lawmakers. Student senators sponsor bills, conduct committee hearings, debate legislation and discover the unique process of the nation's only unicameral.

The Unicameral Youth Legislature gives behind-the-scenes access to students who have an interest in public office, government, politics, law, public policy, debate or public speaking. Students will learn about the inner workings of the Legislature directly from senators, staff and lobbyists. Bill topics are based on legislation considered during the most recent legislative session. From driving laws to the death penalty, topics selected for the legislature are diverse and engaging.

Legislative activities are conducted at the Nebraska State Capitol Building in the historic Warner Chamber, which was home to the Nebraska Senate until the state consolidated to a one-house legislature in 1937.

The youth legislature is organized by the Nebraska State 4-H Office and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Office youth development program. The Clerk of the Nebraska Legislature, through the Unicameral Information Office, serves as a technical consultant for the Unicameral Youth Legislature.

Registrants are encouraged to apply for a Greg Adams Civic Scholarship award, which covers the full cost of admission. Applicants must submit a short essay. Other $100 scholarships are also available.

Contact the Unicameral Information Office for more information.

MIPS Bytes
Network Attached Storage
NAS (network attached storage) is a device designed for file storage and sharing on a network. The device is small, easy to setup and manage. Physical size varies by how many hard drives you'll need to satisfy your storage needs. However, even a 12-bay system is small compared to a server. Setup is simple and done without having to connect a mouse, keyboard, or monitor. Place the device anywhere with an active network connection and access it using any PC on the same network. Most NAS devices require data redundancy meaning they'll survive at least one hard drive failure. Increasing the amount of hard drives inserted into NAS will add to the storage capacity and/or redundancy.
Although NAS is primarily designed for fast data access, many other features are included. Most NAS devices can be setup as FTP, website, or mail servers. For home use these devices include media servers for streaming content to other devices like TVs. Some systems will function as a security management center for easy access to cameras.
Network attached storage devices are robust but have some limits in comparison to a server. For example, the operating system and applications are designed by the manufacturer and select authorized vendors only, and not all applications are available for installation. In fact, many databases and application frameworks are not an option. Most NAS use a Linux variant for the operating system. Although Linux, Mac, and Windows clients can access the stored data, the underlying data structure is in a Linux format. The data structure makes it more difficult to recover with device failure.
As a reminder, both NAS and server implementations may include data redundancy but an offsite backup is still highly recommended if not required.
