August 2025

Message From Your Chair

Greetings Relatives,

Happy August. The summer heat is still with us, but so is our energy and excitement for the months ahead. I want to wish all our Native children and youth a joyful and blessed start to the new school year. We are so proud of this upcoming generation, ready to protect our tribal communities and give back in powerful ways.

I hope your cornfields are thriving. I am especially looking forward to the fall season. I even started my own little corn plot this year, and it has been such a joy watching those stalks grow taller each week.

We are hopeful that the Native Caucus will be able to take part in the Northern Navajo Fair in Shiprock this year. It is quite the parade route, but what better way to enjoy a crisp fall day than with community, movement, and celebration.

We cannot wait to share a full rundown of our Strategic Plan at our next General Meeting. We hope you can join us and be part of shaping our work ahead.

With gratitude and solidarity,

Jana Pfeiffer, Diné

Emergency Business Meeting – SCC Member Selection

Update on Emergency Business Meeting and Formal Vote

The Native American Democratic Caucus of New Mexico held an Emergency Business Meeting on Sunday, August 10, 2025, to address serious concerns regarding the April 8 selection of the 14 Native American State Central Committee members.

Due to recent letters received by the NADCNM and the need for the leadership team to review this correspondence and reach out to the SCC Members involved, and the formal vote on our intended course of action has been postponed until Thursday, August 28, 2025. This will ensure that the process remains transparent, fair, and fully compliant with DPNM Rules and NADCNM Bylaws.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our members as we work to address this matter thoroughly and respectfully. Please feel free to reach out to the Leadership team if you have any questions, regarding this matter.

"Medicaid Cuts Will Be a Disaster for ERs"

Emergency care in the United States is facing a growing crisis. Hospital closures, physician shortages, and major Medicaid cuts under President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” are threatening access to life-saving services. With $1 trillion in cuts over the next decade, up to 17 million people may lose health coverage, placing even more strain on already overstretched emergency rooms and affecting both uninsured families and those with private insurance.
