On May 25, NADTC co-sponsored a webinar with Community Care Corps on the TrustedRide Certified program, a model that recruits and trains volunteer chaperones to ride along with older adults and people with disabilities who need assistance to ride. The webinar discussed how this model works in conjunction with different types of transportation and highlighted two local programs that are using this approach. FAQ Released: Transactional Data Specifications

NADTC and AARP co-hosted 2 webinars in May, titled More Mobility, Stronger Connections: Using Transactional Data Specifications (TDS). Recordings and materials for both webinars Part 1 and Part 2 are posted on the NADTC website. A new Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) document is now available here, including questions that were not answered during the live webinar.

Lyft: Join the Ride of the Century
|
|
|
In an ongoing effort to increase access to COVID-19 vaccinations, Lyft has partnered with the White House to offer two free rides (up to $15), to and from vaccination appointments. Ride codes were valid beginning May 24 and can be used for rideshare, bikeshare or a scooter ride.

COVID-19 Response Program Information Collection
|
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has launched a new online application to collect information from direct recipients and subrecipients on the impacts of COVID-19. FTA will use the data to inform FTA actions in support of the transit industry's COVID-19 response and recovery efforts and implementation of the federal mask requirement for public transportation.
Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announcement that it would no longer enforce mask requirements in outdoor areas of transportation conveyances or while outdoors at transportation hubs, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) developed Frequently Asked Question (FAQs) regarding mask applicability, enforcement and implementation in outdoor areas near transit.

Nuria Fernandez Confirmed as Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration
|
|
|
On June 10, 2021, the United States Senate confirmed Nuria Fernandez as the 15th Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Ms. Fernandez has become the first woman of color to be confirmed to the top position, and will lead the 550-person agency. Prior to this appointment under the Biden Administration, Ms. Fernandez was General Manager and CEO of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, as well as a member of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Executive Committee, and Chair of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) from 2019-2020.

NADTC's Transportation Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative: National Convening

Member Spotlight: Laura Trejo, Los Angeles County Department on Aging
|
|
|
Ms. Trejo is General Manager for the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging, serving one of the largest and most diverse concentrations of older persons in the country. She is the lead for Purposeful Aging L.A. (PALA) an age-friendly initiative “to make the Los Angeles region the most age friendly in the world.” Transportation and mobility are critical in a large geographic region like Los Angeles, and it is one the eight priories for PALA, as well as, looking at how to best integrate dementia friendly approaches to transportation policy and programs. Ms. Trejo is committed to ensuring access, availability, and reliability.
Ms. Trejo has received many accolades during her career, including being awarded the Excellence in Leadership award from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging in 2020. Los Angeles Magazine named her among its “50 Most Influential Women” and the United States Library of Congress has recognized Ms. Trejo’s accomplishments as a force for social change.

Community Care Corps Grants: Innovative Models Using Volunteers
|
|
|
The Community Care Corps has released a Request for Proposals for the second round of Community Care Corps grants. This national program is administered by the Oasis Institute with support from National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, the Caregiver Action Network and the Altarum Institute with funding from the Administration for Community Living.
Through this grant opportunity, the Community Care Corps seeks to fund innovative local models in which volunteers assist family caregivers directly assisting older adults or adults with disabilities with non-medical care to maintain their independence. Proposals are due by Friday, July 9.

Cambridge Systematics: Equity-in-Action Grants
|
Cambridge Systematics is offering in-kind planning grants for up to three grantees to study travel patterns in historically disadvantaged communities. Each project will conduct research to address transit inequities and/or equitable impact of transportation investments in health care or healthy outcomes related to COVID-19 recovery, education, jobs and job training, access to fresh food and other key determinants of health and economic security.
Grants will be awarded to Nonprofit 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and/or 501(c)(6) organizations who seek to improve equity in their communities.

Notice of Funding Opportunity: Public Transportation on Indian Reservations Program
|
FTA has announced a funding opportunity of up to $10 million in Fiscal Year 2021 competitive grant funding to support transit services for American Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages in rural areas. Application submissions to Grants.gov opened on Thursday, May 27, 2021 and the application period will close on Wednesday, August 25.
FTA’s Tribal Transit Program is authorized by Congress to support public transportation for federally recognized Indian Tribes and Alaska Native villages, groups, or communities, and to meet the needs of older adults, people with disabilities, and youth in rural areas where there are important transit needs.

Newly Published: Rural Transit Fact Book
|
The Small Urban and Rural Center on Mobility (SURCOM) has published an updated edition of the Rural Transit Fact Book, which presents data from the National Transit Database (NTD) and rural demographic and travel data from the American Community Survey and the National Household Travel Survey. This publication is intended to serve as a national resource for statistics and information on rural transit in America. The Fact Book includes rural demographic and travel behavior data as well as financial, operating, and fleet statistics and performance measures for agencies receiving Section 5311 funding. In addition to national level data, statistics are presented by state, FTA region, tribe, and mode, as well as other agency characteristics.

U.S. Department of Transportation Request for Information on Transportation Equity Data
|
The U.S. Department of Transportation is seeking input from the public on data and assessment tools available to assess transportation equity. The Request for Information (RFI) on Transportation Equity Data is now open through July 22, 2021. The Department plans to use the information received to further enhance transportation equity in the industry.
