Best Practices Compendium

This will be the final best practices highlight from NADTC's Best Practices Compendium, all of which are based on the work of grant projects supported by NADTC from 2017-2019.
This month’s Best Practice Showcase, Volunteer Transportation, features two grantees – one in Buffalo, NY, the other in the Coastal Bend region of Texas. Both worked with outside experts to start their programs. These successful volunteer transportation programs were created to fill identified transportation gaps in their communities and continue to thrive with the support of dedicated volunteer drivers.

2021 Section 5310 Spotlight

Each month, NADTC will highlight one informational brief that is featured in the 2021 FTA Section 5310 Compendium. This publication showcases the various uses of FTA Section 5310 Funding, including examples implemented by human services agencies and transportation programs across the United States.
July's spotlight, Travel Training Instruction using FTA Section 5310 provides an overview of the various programs available to people who want to learn how to ride the bus, which is often the biggest fear for new riders. This report showcases three travel training programs from around the country that have implemented formal travel training programs, using FTA Section 5310 funding, to assist riders in using transportation to lead an independent life.

NADTC published its Annual Trends Report that reviews trending topics in transportation from 2021. The Trends Report provides an overview of what’s happening in the industry and important transportation issues in communities across the U.S. This month, we are focusing on passengers with Alzheimer's or dementia.
June's spotlight, Public Transit and Passengers with Alzheimer's or Dementia, discusses the importance of understanding the characteristics of all users being served, especially those with memory loss, related to Alzheimer’s or dementia. This Trends Report identifies common barriers or challenges individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia might encounter while riding the bus and presents strategies for communicating with riders.

U.S. DOT announced new guidance and $7.3 billion in funding for their new PROTECT Formula Funding Program to make transit infrastructure more resilient to future weather events and other natural disasters for public transportation systems. Safe Streets and Roads for All
|

The U.S. DOT announced $5 million in funding, over the next 5 years, to establish the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) discretionary grant program. Focused on a goal of zero deaths and serious injury on our nation’s roadways, this opportunity is open to Metropolitan Planning Organizations, counties, cities or towns, transit agencies and federally recognized tribal governments. Applications must be submitted in grants.gov by September 15, 2022

All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP)
|
|
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announces the availability of $343 million of Fiscal Year 2022 funds for the All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP) to make it easier for people with disabilities to access the nation's oldest subways, commuter rail and light rail stations. The Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is now open, and applications must be submitted in grants.gov by September 30, 2022.

U.S. Access Board Discontinues 800 Number
The U.S. Access Board has discontinued its toll-free 800 phone number for technical assistance, however, continues to offer assistance by calling (202) 272-0080, ex. 3, or by email at ta@access-board.gov from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (ET) weekdays. Accessibility specialists are available to answer questions on accessibility as it relates to the built environment, outdoor sites, streets and sidewalks, transportation vehicles, information and communication technology, and medical diagnostic equipment.

National Falls Prevention Month
|
|
September is National Falls Prevention Month, with special emphasis on the first official day of fall, September 22. This month brings attention to the need for injury prevention and decreasing preventable falls, which impact more than 25% of older adults each year. AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety conducted research indicating that older adults who had fallen were 40% more likely to experience a motor vehicle incident than those who had not fallen.

NADTC Celebrates Grandparents!
|
|
More than 2.6 million children in the U.S. live with grandparents or other relatives, and during the month of September we celebrate the contribution of grandparents! In the absence of parents or other relatives, grandparents raising their grandchildren frequently seek available resources needed to provide safe and reliable transportation, as well as other essential needs.
Older adults who are seeking volunteer opportunities, AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparents Program offers a way to connect with a child in need and provide the loving care and support only a grandparent can provide, preparing them for a successful future. Foster Grandparents often rely on public transportation to get where they need to go, for additional resources, please visit NADTC's website.

National Hispanic Heritage Month
|
|
NADTC celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and embraces the opportunity to work with diverse populations through its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative. Dr. Yanira Cruz, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Council on Aging and a member of NADTC’s DEI Advisory Committee said, “There is a lack of data in terms of what we know about these important populations, so this [DEI initiative] is way overdue.” More information about NADTC’s DEI initiative can be found on our website, a report on our DEI focus group findings will be published in September.

National Preparedness Month

|
September is National Preparedness Month, and NADTC recognizes this as an opportune time to emphasize the importance of planning ahead for an emergency or natural disaster, especially for those needing an accessible vehicle or transportation services. This year's Ready.gov national campaign focuses on underserved communities, which includes specific guidance and messaging for older adults and people with disabilities, as a way to connect them to critical resources.
