Blog: Am I a Safe Driver? Evaluating Older Driver Safety

NADTC’s June blog discusses the life-changing event of giving up the keys for older adults. Unfortunately, many older adults wait until they can no longer drive before giving public transportation a chance. This blog highlights the connections between programs that support older driver safety and how they can ensure a smoother transition to use public transit or community transportation options sooner.

Brochure Update: Developed jointly with Eldercare Locator, NADTC has updated its longstanding resource, Transportation Options, to capture the needs of community service providers and the mobility of older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers.

  • Transportation Options for Community Service Providers: targeted to community organizations that work directly with older adults and people with disabilities and is intended to help professionals connect with local transportation options available in the community that serve the needs of their clients.
  • Transportation Options for Mobility Independence: targeted to the needs of older adults and people with disabilities, and is designed to help them learn about transportation resources available in their community that best meet their needs.

Check Out the Newly Added 5310 Profiles!

NADTC recently added three new agency profiles, Massachusetts DOT, Chicago Regional Transit Authority and Washington DOT/WTA to our 5310 Program Agency Profile Resource. These additions showcase transportation programs that are using 5310 in non-traditional ways, thinking beyond the bus, to inspire fresh ideas for enhancing mobility and independence for older adults and people with disabilities.

Lessons Learned: Technology Focused ICAM and M4A Grant Funding Projects

Since 2018, NADTC has overseen 56 Innovative Coordinated Access and Mobility (ICAM) and 16 Mobility for All (M4A) grants. This Lessons Learned report highlights several projects focused on technology improvements, and reviews many of the lessons learned from implementing the projects. Learn more about other ICAM and M4A grant projects on our webpage.

Happening Now

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the ADA! On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into Law. Since then, our nation's transportation system has been transformed by this Civil Rights Legislation which in turn, has positively impacted the freedom and independence of people with disabilities. Visit the ADA National Network for ways to recognize this event in your community.

FTA Updates and Resources

Coordinating Council on Access and Mobility (CCAM) updated their program inventory to include 13 new partner agencies whose programs support transportation services. The CCAM Program Inventory identifies 132 federal programs that may provide transportation funding assistance, and can be used to explore new partnership opportunities for your local projects.

Partner Updates

On July 16, the National Rural Transportation Assistance Program (RTAP) will celebrate Rural Transit Day. National RTAP will be hosting a Facebook Live event on July 16, from 2-3 PM EST, to focus on what transit agencies are doing to recognize passengers and staff, and to discuss challenges, solutions and best practices from around the country. For more information, visit their website!

Funding Opportunities

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced the availability of $1.5 billion under the Grants for Bus and Bus Facilities and Low or No Emissions Program. Previously, the funding programs have been awarded separately, and have since been combined for reduction of overlapping program eligibilities.
